You may use tokens from year to year.

No tokens have been "retired", but some are obsolete due to changes in the way the game is played.

There are a few tokens that no longer have any in-game effect, such as the Knock and Light scrolls and the Major/Minor Rumors. Also, special event tokens (Guild of Ale Drinkers, Golden Ticket, etc.) are limited for use in their year of printing only.

But these instances are pretty rare. Pretty much all of the tokens can be used any year, at least for the foreseeable future. (I suppose there's always the possibility that some rule change could make certain tokens defunct, but that's pretty unlikely at this point.)

I am well aware that this can be addicting, as I keep stopping myself from splurging on ebay for some tokens :) I come from the land of Heroclix were I have spent a kings ransom on plastic crack.

Ro-Gan- I wish I could make it to the who's yer con. But I cannot. Also I would want to check out the mini dungeon and alike but 2K to drop up front is pretty steep. Do people usually go in on these packages?

Brad- thanks for the advise on just outfitting yourself. I was wondering if anyone used the common items/weapons or just used them for fodder/transmuting.

I'm an old school Heroclix player, Jrfurna. I started playing when Heroclix first came out. I'm also on HCRealms as Ro-gan. We might have even played against each other at one point, depending how many of the various Cons you've been to in the past few years.

Don't worry about TD Tokens being like Heroclix. It is so rare that any Token gets "retired" or some such like in Heroclix or other games out there. As previously has been said already by others that Token list is very small and wasn't done because of "game balance."

For example, the Minor/Major Rumor Tokens were done away with because TD stopped having an NPC walking around with a rumor to give out for that Rumor Token and/or stopped having the Coaches do it. I think that's why. But, it wasn't because of "game balance." Now, an NPC walks around and can be bribed with common tokens for info and Coaches can be, too.

I know one year there was an NPC that gave out rumors for food Tokens because they were hungry and between adventures.

Think of TD like a live-action AD&D game with friends or people you just met. Just not as geeky as it really sounds... like LARP'ing. LOL!!

Don't get caught up in the Token addictiveness just yet. Like I said in my original post, the very first time I did TD years ago I went through with friends and had less than 7 Tokens. And, none of them was a UR [Ultra Rare]. We did Puzzle mode in Hardcore [this was before Nightmare mode existed] and all survived. We did have one guy die, but he was able to come back after beating "Death" by sliding a 20 in a back room. That was back when they used a "Death" NPC. So, as long as you are good at solving puzzles and using teamwork you will be fine with a handful of affordable Tokens. After you play a couple times and get the itch to buy Tokens then do it.

And, maybe one year you will give back to the TD Community and volunteer a part-time shift at TD during GenCon. It sounds like work and blowing away valuable playing time at GenCon, but, believe it or not, it's just as fun or better. This will be my 3rd year volunteering and it gets better every year. Everyone is so fun to work with and I can't think of even one negative thing to say about it.
"It's treason then."

I do recommend taking a copy of the various "Gear" tokens like 50' Rope, Hammer & spike, torch, etc. Most of them are commons, and you can sometimes use them to aid in completing Dungeons :)

I will second Mike's suggestion about gear tokens!

I have a token folder with 20ish gear tokens and I always use something from that folder at least once on each run, each year.

You never know when you might need to use a rope to pull a player out of a pit trap (this past year) or a pouch to transport an item across a ravine (two years ago)

JrFurna, just wanted to jump in to:

1. Third Mike's comment about gear. All gear is a common and I think most of the long-term players carry around a stack of it into each dungeon. It's not USUALLY useful, but about once per dungeon, something will be. A small steel mirror (and this year I believe a waterskin or flask) is always useful, as it lets you reflect gaze attacks if you hold it on your forehead.

2. As a Rare Plus level player, I can tell you that you can kit yourself out extremely well for multiple classes by putting together about $20-30 in well-chosen tokens. A purchase of $100 or $250 worth of random token packs will usually net enough to get good equipment for 3-5 people. This year is especially good because there are some pretty amazing items for Wizards, Clerics, Druids, Barbarians, Rogues and Bards, with the usual solid choices for the heavy armor classes.

There is a lot of gear overlap between melee classes and similarly between heavy armor classes, so you can pretty safely gear yourself out for a range of classes with only a couple tokens switched out.

For example, I prefer to play Fighter, but by switching out my armor, I can be Barbarian, and by switching my weapon I can be Paladin or Cleric. I off-class as a casting-specced Bard, which means that, again, by changing my armor I am suddenly a Wizard.

Rogue, Monk and Druid probably require the most specific equipment of the classes.

Re: Another Newbie question 10 years 2 months ago #22

Had a different question from a different newbie. I see that classes are picked either ahead of time if your group has all the tickets for that run and can work it out amongst themselves ahead of time, or at the event for PUGs. Is there any method in the ticket sale system to exchange emails or cell phone numbers, to give the option to Pick Up Groups that want to coordinate in advance? For example, we have a group of six, so will end up with 4 random people. It would be really nice to be able to exchange an email or call before showing up, so we can have an inkling of what tokens, costumes, etc. to bring.

I did see someone else mentioning a Looking For Group message board being created as the event gets closer, and that might work if we can find in advance a group with similar schedule flexibility. But in case we have to go random, just wondering if there was a means for communicating ahead of time?

Thanks!

There will be separate threads here for all the different dungeon runs. You can find partial groups or groups looking for people. Some people buy an entire run, then they fill it with people from the forum. I got in with a group for 'greedy' sealed runs last year, and had a ton of fun.

For that level of information TD would need to access the database of Gencon. As far as I know TD only gets the name of people for each ticket they sell, and no other personal information.

As such I believe the only way to communicate with other players is if they post on a forum such as this one or the forums on the Gencon site.
