Newbie questions 10 years 3 months ago #1

Hello all!

I am new to True Dungeon, but not gaming or Gen Con. I am setting aside time for TD this year and I am looking forward to it!

I looked for a new player thread and couldn't find one.
What is the process to start a new character? Also I noticed that there was a release party in January last year for tokens, will there be a release party for 2014?
Thanks you for your help :)

Hi James - welcome to TD! I'm sure you'll have a blast.

You won't know what character class for sure that you'll be playing until you get to the con (unless you get in with a group that organizes ahead of time - happens a lot on here). So you'll want to pick up tokens for your preferred class, but prepare for other possibilities.

The closest thing that I know of for a release party is a get together at Who's Yer Con in late February. Although, come to think of it, I'm not sure that the 2014 tokens will be out by then. Sorry - hopefully someone will chime in that knows more than me...

Welcome!

The 2014 Tokens should be shipping by the end of January. According to the Site. I've got my order placed and it'll be like a 2nd Christmas for me. B)

Who's Yer Con will have TD and a psuedo-Token release party will be there... for lack of a better word. In other words, I'm assuming a lot of TD'ers will be there and trading/selling the new Token set and "upgrading"/converting their Tokens. I'm hoping I can make it this year.

If you will just be buying a TD ticket for yourself at this year's GenCon/TD then, like was said, prepare to have to play any class character. Higher level people get dibs, but most are very cordial and helpful.

To be honest, the first time I ever did TD (2005?) I went through with my gaming friends and had about 4 Tokens to my name that I was able to use for the adventure. I did fine. Of course, we always did Puzzle so Tokens are helpful but not truly necessary. And, of course, over the years I have quite the Token collection because it is quite addictive. ;)

Just remember to have fun and you'll do great.

Welcome!
Not sure from your question, so if this isn't helpful I apologize in advance...

All characters are pre-generated. You can find the character sheets elsewhere on the site. Where you customize your character is through tokens, which represent armor, weapons and equipment.

You play as 4th level unless you have some tokens that let you play as 5th.

So to start a character, you buy a ticket and show up :) you get a pack of ten tokens each time you play but you'll probably need to trade, borrow or buy a few tokens to avoid feeling too naked.

The party divvies up the available characters, and if you're new the more experienced players will usually lend you some tokens to outfit yourself. Every time you play you can choose the same or a different character. Most people have a favorite and collect tokens for that class, but that's not required.

The next question most ask is, how much do I need to spend on tokens? IMO, the answer is honestly zero. The game is designed so a party of ten newbies can share their ten packs of tokens and have a good chance of surviving to the last room on normal mode. But we all love tokens here. You'll see people show up with gear worth anywhere from $10 to $10,000 or more. The more you're willing to invest the more options you'll have and the better your chances of surviving or playing at higher difficulties. So the question is how much you WANT to spend, and whatever your answer, it's enough.

Finally, you'll see some very expensive tokens out there. It's more important to have some gear in every slot. If money is a factor, $8 worth of carefully chosen commons and uncommons plus a $2 rare weapon will make you more powerful than a single $100 token.

Thanks for all the replies!

I am well aware that this can be addicting, as I keep stopping myself from splurging on ebay for some tokens :) I come from the land of Heroclix were I have spent a kings ransom on plastic crack.

Ro-Gan- I wish I could make it to the who's yer con. But I cannot. Also I would want to check out the mini dungeon and alike but 2K to drop up front is pretty steep. Do people usually go in on these packages?

Brad- thanks for the advise on just outfitting yourself. I was wondering if anyone used the common items/weapons or just used them for fodder/transmuting.

The mini dungeon or Astral dungeon ticket, can be bought by those that buy some of the larger packages and they sell the extra. I believe they are going for 100-130 dollars for a Astral token. If it's your first time I would shy away from it only because for that amount you could outfit yourself in all red tokens (Rare) with a few green (Uncommon) filler tokens.

As for the 2k packages a few of us buy them solo, or they order 8k packs and sell off the PYP (Pick your Purple) and other goodies from the package to cover the costs of the package and have a few "free" tidbits left. I've never done it, but I buy 1-2 2k packs a year for me and my soon to be wife. It can be very addictive... so be warned!

I would say wait for the inital purchase to be made and then look on the forums, and for a good price you can put together a red/green set for a class or two for 100 or less, to try it out. This coming from the guy that started out buying 10 PYP's ($2500) before even playing.

Hope this helps!

Jrfurna, people do go in on larger packages sometimes but mostly people that buy the very large token packages usually offer up a PYP or Pick Your Purple.

For every $250 they spend they get to pick an ultra rare. When a person buys a couple fo $8k packages they are left with a LOT of extra PYP's that they really can't use. They then offer up the extras at a current going rate. At the moment that rate is $100 per PYP.

This lets them get the other benefits of the large order while giving smaller buyers the ability to get an UR at a reduced amount.

As to outfitting, I still miss my Rare (red) Boots of Free Action. There are some oddities in Best in Slot tokens also. One of them is for the Bard. The Footman set with its bonuses is just 1AC less than the Ultra Rares that a bard can use in the same spots. The Footman set is just uncommon (green) also. My groups Bard uses it and we often do nightmare runs.
You can't fix stupid but you can TPK it.

Alvin- thanks for the advice! I can easily see myself going down the token hole. Addictive personality= I have to collect it all! But I have played pathfinder and other RPGs and realize that over paying for a weapon early on doesn't necessarily get you equal gains.
Also the fact that I can be any character, since I am low man on the totem pole, helps me from initial splurging.

My next questions: what are the onyx tokens? I have seen them on ebay recently but cannot find much info on them.

can you use any tokens from any year or do they retire out?

The transmuted boots from this year will be nice to have (+2 dex and boots of free action).

Onyx tokens are black backed tokens that were origonally proof tokens, but are just a set of tokens you can now get with the 8k packs. It doesn't do anything extra as far as powers. They are just a back color that people like to collect. Cool factor is all.

As far as I know there are no retired tokens, but I'm only on my second year of playing. I know you can use tokens from previous years (Some of mine are from 2007). Certain tokens have no use anymore (tokens that let you into the tavern) but all the other you can use.

Minor thead hyjack. Did we ever get confirmation from Jeff the adventurers guild/asteral buttons would be transferable?

the last news letter kind of made it look like you could use them bring your friends but not actually sell them.
