In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: Ceilings

I wanted to find the thread where room ceilings were being discussed but couldn't find it...

Anyone involved behind the scenes during the year with the giant spider remember any problems with using cargo netting as a ceiling/web?

I don't remember which thread, but I believe it was stated that it was a fire hazard to have ceilings on the dungeon. Especially with lights and stuff like that.

More likely a fire code violation. In my world (health care) anything like a ceiling has to have sprinklers.

Solid ceilings are out due to Fire Code. Cammo net ceilings were a real pain to set up and they made lighting the rooms very difficult. The lights has to be above the nets and shine down through them.

This caused problems setting up and aiming the lights. Also with the lights above the nets it made very obvious shadows that drew attention to the nets. The whole concept with the nets is to be hidden and make your peripheral vision kind of sort of fill them in as solid. Lights above the nets spoiled that effect.

I can see how the nets would be a pain to set up, and of course having the lights shine through them from above would be a headache and spoil the effect. Would there be another way to do the lights though? The lights seem to be on thin necks; could they poke out between wall panels? Just some battery-powered "fanned fabric fire" torches might help, with an actual lamp for the focal areas that require more light such as a combat slider board or a puzzle. Just kicking around ideas.

I remember the discussion about a solid ceiling being out of the question for fire code reasons. But in that discussion I raised the possibility of netting, and someone commented that probably wouldn't be allowed either, but yet I found this picture where it was clearly used at one point. So, I guess I was mostly asking for confirmation that the nets were okay for fire code.

The camo nets also made it really difficult for the electrical crew to take out the cables and speakers during teardown - everything kept getting tangled, which slowed down the next steps of teardown.

What about hanging a "starlit sky" high above so we aren't seeing the convention hall venting when we look up? A starlit sky would have worked for both modules this year....

Doesn't interfere with ground based lighting, or set up and tear down... and still meets fire code.

More dead-horse beating, but I think the best way to make the ceiling look better is to light the storyscape more. People's eyes will be drawn to the things they can see, and it will mess up their nightvision so they can't see the ceiling anyway.
