In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: Character builds

Character builds 10 years 7 months ago #1

I got to run my first TD this year and absolutely loved it. I had bought 1 ticket for Lycans Afoot and was lucky enough to get to hop onto a True Grind and Golems Bane. I got the experience of running 3 different character classes: Ranger, Fighter, and Monk. Since I played the Ranger on my first run, I started putting together a Ranger build. Then, I didn't actually get to use it on subsequent runs.

I will very likely not have a large group I can run with next year. Based on those with more experience than me, is there a character class that is less popular that would be best for me to focus on? Or should I just build what I want and be prepared to be flexible when it comes to party formation?
I finally found a use for the Crown Royal bags ... Tokens!

I have never seen a group, not in years anyway, that has actually had two wizards.

A good Fighter build can work for either of the Fighters or a Paladin, and is easily shiftable into a Barbarian or Ranger build.

Ranger is always one of the top picks.

If you pick Monk, chances are you will get it. Only I and a few others here actively pursue that class.

I was in a run with two Wizards (Adeya and her 'apprentice') but that is a rarity.

In 1 run of each of the 3 dungeons, I recall:

Monk was unused in all 3.
Elf Wizard was unused in 2 runs.
Dwarf Fighter was unused in 2 runs (I think)
Druid was unused in 1 run

I don't recall the last unused character.

About half the runs I go on every year have two wizards... Apparently that's weird?

As already mentioned, doing a "slider" build will set you up very well for any of the combat classes and you'll just have to switch armors around.

Are you thinking Red or Purple level build?

Athos,

If you want a sure spot at a particular class, Ranger or otherwise, my advice would be to plan it out ahead of time on the forum. Get a group of ten together, have everyone pick their class, then buy out a full run when tickets go on sale next year. It can be difficult to grab a full run when GenCon opens the gates of ticket sales, but it's not impossible.

And every run I've been on has always had at least one wizard - me! I enjoy runs with two wizards though, especially with a newbie that I dub my apprentice for the run. And sometimes I'm lucky enough to do a run with the master wizard bpsymington. Then I'm the apprentice. :)

If it were me I'd start by building a good generic setup

A defenders set & +1 bastard sword / +1 dwarven throwing hammer put you in good shape for both fighters, the cleric and the Pali. From there a chain of the vale, heartwood armor, and mage robe of the vale along with a +1 short sword and quarter staff cover your bases on just about every other class. Once you have those you can focus on generically useful stuff like gauntlets of ogre power, the +1 saves Ioun, bracers of fire, and the PLUS 2 saves cloak, etc. Add a light ranged weapon like a +1 sling and you should be able to equip yourself respectably on just about any class for less then $50 total.

Then just roll with it, give them all a try and see what you like best before you commit to a build as in my experience even when your.good to go on with new thing you occasionally have to play something else for the good of the group anyway.

Most people try to avoid being overly squishy in a dungeon. Not to mention a lot of the wizard tokens are wizard specific, making them a one...errr...what's that turn of phrase...you know...the one where you're a something with only one something. $%^& it, you all know what I mean. It's the same problem with monk. If you equip them, you're looking for a select set of tokens and it won't apply to any other class for the most part. So it's really like doubling down since those are also the two classes most likely to be unselected as most people will seek flexibility.

AHA! A one trick pony!

Archmage One-Trick Pony here!

I agree that cleric/fighter/dwarf fighter/paladin are easy to prepare for with similar tokens, and that the wizards and monk are sort of the most token-specific, although the rogue has a bunch of tokens specific to its own needs.

Two of my four runs this year had both wizards. One was with my awesome apprentice Adeya - so if Adeya takes on a apprentice of her own, is that wizard my grand-apprentice? :cheer: On both runs we were purped out, dealing big damage in the first two rounds.

Actually, Adeya, did we do a run and True Grind, or just Grind?

I equip a team of 10 each year and we have always had 2 wizards (since they were introduced). Due to the excessive weight of my folders I have not created a folder for a Monk or a Ranger. These are the two classes my team does not play.

Mostly because of coordination issues, LOL!

However, this year a request was made to create a Ranger, which I will be doing by modifying the Barbarian folder to be a Barbarian/Ranger folder. I think I can (mostly) get away with a few changes in armor and weapons.
