In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

We did combat run with a group that only had 3 level 5 characters (ranger, cleric, fighter), the other 7 had 4 - 7 purples and bunch of reds, between them and 2 of the 7 had only tokens from the packs. Made it through combat Golembane taking only 50 points of total damage among the party.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the difficulty of Hardcore was tuned for players who have access to rare tokens, but don't really have the resources for UR tokens. Thus, if you have 3 5th level characters, you're a little overpowered for the intended audience.

I think the difficulty rate was more like this:

Non-Lethal - Group is just starting out or just wants the story

Normal - Anywhere from only the tokens they are given all the way to an Ultra Rare or two across the whole party

Hardcore - The party is well equipped with Rares and some Ultra Rares in key spots. Maybe one or two people bumped to 5th level

Nightmare - You better be loaded for (Bug)bear!
You can't fix stupid but you can TPK it.

cdsmith wrote: The reason the XP is the same for Hardcore and Nightmare is to separate those people out of the group that were just doing Nightmare for XP.

In the past people would run nightmare even if they were not quite up to the task. It wasn't a ton of people but it was still sizable. Keeping the XP the same lets the people searching for max XP get it with hardcore. Those that really want a much bigger challenge can get it in Nightmare.

Until I heard about this I was wondering why the XP was the same. Now it makes perfect sense. Nightmare runs are not about the XP.

Nightmare is for those that want a difficult challenge. Even though I play both Nightmare and Hardcore (or normal in previous years) I've argued for a long time that Nightmare SHOULD NOT get any additional rewards. I am gald we are moving in that direction.

After thinking about it more, if they are going to give Nightmare both tokens and hardcore only gives one, that kind of balances it out. I'm good with that...
