In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: First Impression

Re: First Impression 10 years 7 months ago #13

Different packs might be the way to go, but one per class might be too specific. It's uncommon for a newbie to get the precise card they want... But maybe a slider pack and caster pack would make sense.

And I don't mind making up cheap builds, it's kind of a fun puzzle for me, but I have to figure out a reasonable way to make it work.

Charging generics for time in a training hall sounds like a possibility with potential too. I kind of like that. Although it means needing more volunteers to run.

Gold is available from GamingEtc at the going rate or (if you're willing to dig a bit) a smallish discount.

The main challenge is that there's no way of knowing that/preparing in the five minutes before a run. The first time I did TD, I filled a last-minute slot. But I had been hanging out in the Tavern talking to other players for a few hours beforehand and getting some idea of what I needed to have as far as tokens and what I needed to be prepared for.

Basically, preparation pays off.

I really like the idea of a dart board for challenges and such. It would really another volunteer though to keep an eye on the boards and sliders. You don't need but a few on each board to represent the darts.

Jeff already mentioned to me during tear down that he was thinking about a tournament of sliding in some forum perhaps at Whosyer Con. I want to stress that he only said he thought it would be neat not that it was going to happen.

I have to say the starter pack (provided by Brad) was extremely helpful for me; it really gave me a good kick start into the game and increased my interest greatly. I also would have loved the option to practice a bit prior to playing; I agree that could increase interest. One thing I noticed from last year to this year, last year I became interested because when I walked in I could see people sliding, it was very active and I saw people having fun when I walked in. This year everything was hidden, so it did seem a bit hidden this time.

A couple of things in response to all of this talk.

First, tokens. A couple of years ago we had basic tokens for new players and almost nobody needed or wanted them.

If you want more time to prepare get a ticket ahead of time. The replacement program only fills tickets that don't show up. It is by design a rush and there really is no way around that. It is actually a better program by far then it used to be when very few players didn't show up. You might have had to wait for hours and still not get to play.

For all those interested in learning about TD before you go in, the DDA offers a seminar, free to the public called TD-101. We even opened a third time of it this year. We go over the whole game top to bottom. We go into detail about everything that you will ever need to know.

There are many many many thousands of dollars in token sales each year. TD has tried to sell other things and they don't usually sell very well.
TD is profitable enough to still be here after over 10 years.
The event sells out at 44 dollars which means the price isn't going to come down, basic economics.

Since nobody else comment on this:
When the OP asked why the "Token Guide" wasn't available for sale, it's because it's never been in a printed form. It's always been available for free on the website. Some might print it up and bring it to the Con with them, but for the most part, it's just a bonus for people to look at all the tokens available.
Life is like a sewer. What you get out of it depends entirely on what you put into it.

They could have offered the 2013 Quick Token Reference. (The all-encompassing token guide would be monstrous to print out.) The quick reference version has been printed, as it is included in token orders of $2k and above.

Since this year-specific guide is only 16 pages long, it should be easy to have a case of them on hand for players to buy at, say, $5-7 each. I suppose that is a riskier proposal than it was for the Player's Guide though, as any unsold copies would likely have to be sold at deep discount after the first year.
