In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: Planning for Themes

Planning for Themes 10 years 7 months ago #1

I have only been on one run before, so I am curious how much of an impact themes have on runs. Would you ever choose something to counter-act a theme vs standard or better gear? Would you use the Tinker's gloves instead of Gauntlets, or Chainmail of the Vale vs other armor?

2013 Possible Themes
Hot and cold objects
Lycanthropy
Magnetic effects
Outdoor environment
Read and speak fey
Seeing in the dark
Silver weapons
Sleeping in armor
Slips and falls
Traps

Depends. For the underwater year, it was on the 'very good idea' side. For the cold weather, I'd put it as a 'good idea'.

For this year... I have no idea. Silver never goes amiss, but I wouldn't really call anything on the list critical at this point.
Blimey!

With the group I am with, we have spread many of those effects around the party. One person has the read fey item. Another the sleep in armor. One is loaded up with anti trap items. Front of the line for him...
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

This is what I encountered.

Hot and cold objects - Golem Combat (1 room)
Lycanthropy - Lycan Both (1 Room)
Magnetic effects - Golem Combat (1 room)
Outdoor environment - Useable Benefits?
Read and speak fey - None
Seeing in the dark - None
Silver weapons - Lycan Both (1 Room)
Sleeping in armor - Lycan Both (1 Room)
Slips and falls - None
Traps - Don't Recall
Wind Set - Nightmare Golem (1 room)

Overall I don't think I got any benefit from the Wind Set. I would be interested in reading the books to see if something should have been in effect but was not.

I am going to guess the wind set will benefit next year.

It took me about 3 runs through Golem to realize that next's year's adventure involving high altitude was about being on airships. I felt so stupid when I realized it. I was with you, kerwin1970 when I did.

It's nice that these sorts of things keep the current year's tokens usable for a while. This probably helps encourage repeat players too. As an added bonus, it keeps us on our toes about what to expect in the adventures.

I would prefer they remain as generally applicable as possible though. The Bracelets of the Tinkerer "immune to magical magnetic effects" is likely to be unhelpful for many years to come, for example.

(And by the way, silver is not affected by magnetic fields! So why were our silver weapons grabbed by the monster? The answer, of course, is "magic". In my opinion, that's not very satisfying.)

All of Lycans was outdoors.

On Nightmare, Cogwind had a non-magic blunder gun.

The fields were not magnetic fields, they were "magimagnetic" fields.

I never saw any benefits from the outdoor gear I had.

Thanks for that, I never ran a Nightmare Golem run.
