In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: Another First Timer

Re: Another First Timer 10 years 11 months ago #13

My thought would be there's a dealer room nearby. Avoid stress and give yourself extra time and if you don't need it you can hang out in the story scape or shopping for deals elsewhere. If you can line up a group early and sort out your equipment on the forums you need less time. Sadly you're buying your ticket before you know for sure...

But if you want to be ready for anything you could get a few random packs, or think about getting a beginner's kit. Thanks for the advice. Actually, I'd already put prices for your beginner kit and a number of other things into a big spreadsheet as I'm looking at cost effective options to prep.

Since it's already $88 to play the two quests, I figured dropping somewhere in the $50 range to make it a better experience (ie being effective in the party) wouldn't be out of the question.

I'd added Saturday around 9am and 12pm onto my wishlist (and it's strange that it now shows up as 5am and 8am on the list.)

I think getting to the even farther in advance for the Lycan quest would be very likely. The three hours is more for ending one module and starting the second. I hope I'd have the lay of the land and most tokens figured out by then.

Still, I think the best case is locking in with a group through these forums for Saturday morning and early afternoon. (There's a 4pm event I'd like to hit on Saturday if I can get all my True Dungeon stuff done by then.) If I don't have a group locked in before tickets go on sail though, I at least want to be assured I can attend.

I guess the related question I should be asking...

How quickly do prearranged groups start forming up on here, especially with locked in times to start planning other events around?

If you are in a prearranged group then you are going to be organized well beforehand with only minor changes in the coaching room. From a really spectacular pull from your token bag, for example. Then its not so important to be there early.

If you are in a pick up group, be there early. Tends to help with getting the class you want and the group will need more organizing. Of course there is a fair possibility that several of the group members will get there right before time and you will be scrambling.

I noticed the event listing said be there 10 minutes before start time. For a pick up group that is not much time. For a prearranged group, its ok.

Yet another question to add to the mix (doesn't deserve another thread).

Is there a reason someone might want to play both the puzzle and the combat versions of the same quest? (Run quests instead of 2?)

There are a couple different rooms between puzzle and combat obviously. This year I will be running each variant at once so I get to see every room.

If XP is important to you, remember you only get it for different storylines. If you play a Lycans and a Golems you get credit for both, but if you run a combat and a puzzle Lycans, for instance, you only get XP for one of them. So it's worth running all 4 if you want to see every room, but you only get XP for two of them. For what that's worth.

OK, really dumb question. What does xp (and leveling up) actually do? Just a prestige thing?

That's an excellent question. It is a prestige thing, but there's also some real benefits. For example, players who are Lvl 3 & higher get to choose their classes before players who are level 2 & lower. Players who are Lvl 5 get access to the Nobles area of this forum (where Jeff sometimes posts teasers & previews). Once you pass a certain level you get ONE extra treasure chip for every time you play. That kind of stuff. (There is or was a list of benefits, but some of the benefits are out-of-date... like Level 4 giving you "free admission to the Tavern" was only a real benefit when they charged a generic ticket for Tavern entrance).

EDIT: Here's the link I was looking for. (Also found under the top menu "What is it?" and "How to Play")

Robert,

Welcome! One of the questions you asked was about when groups would be forming on the forums. While, some are already, they only have a guess about the general times they will be running, as typically TD tickets are fairly competitive to get. Especially full slots. If you just want to pick up a couple single tickets for the puzzle runs you'll probably be able to get some close to your chosen time. But you might want to list a few times for each run around the same time on your GENCON wishlist. If you get too many you can cut them loose before purchasing. If you only choose 1 of each their's a chance you won't get them if someone ahead of you in the queue buys a whole block.

Once tickets are bought people will start forming up groups on the forums. Some will have bought a whole block and look for a couple other people to fill out their runs.

Others will advertise for others who have tickets with them in the same run. My experience is in most case you won't actually find those people. Thus if this is your approach be prepared to play multiple classes when you finally meet your dungeonmates at GENCON.

So if I'm looking to do:
Puzzle versions of both Lycans and Golems any time on Sat or Sun as long as they finish before 4pm, are my chances pretty good that I can just wait and find a group on here, or is there I high chance I simply get locked out.

Sorry if I'm going in circles a bit. I'd love to find a group, but not having tried this before, I'm scared to death that by waiting, everything will fill up and I'll be SOL.

Because of how quick tickets do tend to go I would suggest getting them and then hoping to find the group. Even if you don't find them until the before the event starts you are more likely to have a good time than not being able to any runs. That being said usually there are folks that release tickets back into the system or are looking for someone to fill in. I just don't like to risk it over one of my favorite parts of GenCon.
