TOPIC: AoW at True dungeon

Re: AoW at True dungeon 14 years 9 months ago #25
[soapbox] While knowing might be half the battle, it takes away most of the fun. It's like you're asking for cheat codes for the dungeon. The characters don't know exactly what they'll be facing; they have an idea of what they might face, and they equip themselves accordingly. If you truly feel you need the inside information to survive the dungeon, send Jeff a Major Rumor token along with your question and hope that he gives you some useful information. [/soapbox]

Point well taken, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's like using cheat codes as you still have no idea what will be in the dungeon, it's merely knowing what you'll be wearing walking into the dungeon.

All I'm trying to do is say is I would rather the AoW almost always be useful to me instead of possibly useful to me. And knowing cuts down on the buyer's remorse element that goes with the later scenario. Besides, I'm a firm believer forum communities should get extra perks =). You could always put a SPOILER warning on the thread, so that those that don't want to know don't have to.

Again, merely my opinion, I defer to the greater TD community.

Okay; it's like asking for Cheat Codes for a Wand of Wonder.

Although a WoW is even more insidious since it has a random effect every time you use the item.

If you really want to know what it does without finding out blindly, find someone who is going on one of the early runs with an AoW and then ask, them what it does.

Part of being an adventuring party means attempting to determine what gear you need to take along into the dungeon/adventure. You might not always be right, but that's part of the adventure. In addition, DMs usually seed their dungeons with items that would be of specific help within that dungeon, just in case players don't have some of the more useful items in their inventory.

Maybe I have just found a compromise. If a team has an AoW and they say they are going to use it. One person on the team HAS to use it. Once the effect is known (in the training room) then it could be placed on the person who will benefit from it the most (or if negative effect least harmful).

I thought maybe this will help

Hey now... the amulet literally says cool effect each year, none of that negative effect talk. Heh, watch Jeff make it have an Ice Curse effect one year just for laughs. :O

It did not say cool effect for user, that could mean cool effect for the DM or For Jeff to laugh at us for wearing it.

With regard to the question of AoW providing an extra level this year, I would guess it won't. It did that last year, and Jeff has probably come up with a different interesting (or cool, if you prefer) effect for this year. I get the impression that the AoW is supposed to do something different every year.

Side note to TPTB: It could even have different effects in the same year (e.g. DM has a list of 10 possible effects, player rolls dice/slides slider to determine effect) or effects that vary by room.

i do like the diffeent effect for each room, but the sliding/rolling takes time. If you are running nightmare every little bit counts. If the roll/sliding happened in training room, I think that would be better.

Again we are getting ahead of ourselves because Jeff already "KNOWS" what it is going to do

Although there is certainly no rule that Jeff has to compromise between the differing opinions, I do like your compromise suggestion, Lazlo. I can certainly see why knowing in advance seems super helpful, but it does leave the realm of realism. By at least having it revealed at the coaching site, you preserve some of the realism. I wouldn't want to see the effect vary by room. I could see having it change for each run, but some groups arrive a little too close to the wire as it is, and adding that step to the coaches would likely be problematic. As it was at TR, sometimes the coaches lost time trying to find the correct token to give for the AOW effect.

If we get tokens that would be awesome. There could just be a sign in the room on or by the sliders saying +2 to strength etc. That is just a thought

I disagree... by the middle of the day on Thursday, so many people have let info leak on the dungeon that not much is a surprise any more.

which is why I'm for a "non standardized" dungeon.. one that changes some over the 3 days so that it is different.

It's a surprise for us. My group doesn't really hang around the Tavern, we just show up for our runs, and then go back to gaming elsewhere. So, that keeps the adventures a surprise, but also has the downside of not learning of the neat little "extra's" - like the Cow thing at True Realm.

So - everyone feel free to let me know about any extra stuff like that if you see me at GENCON - I'd hate to miss out on fun True Dungeon stuff =)
