TOPIC: Surprising eBay Results?

Surprising eBay Results? 14 years 11 months ago #1

Just thought I'd start a thread to discuss any particularly unusual eBay results:

- We've already mentioned the $200 Medallion of Greyhawk

- Also surprised to see the Amulet of Oak going for $107.50(!!!). I mean, the Amulet is decent for True Grind, but I still think that HoP/AoW/Medallion are generally far better. And anyone spending $100+ could probably just buy a Purp instead. Sure, it is a dungeon-only token requiring an AoW. But still. So what's up with this fascination with the Amulet of Oak?

- I didn't expect to see the Ring of Wizardry go for $197.50. It's great for Wizards, but it's use is so limited. Most Wizards I know aren't very good sliders anyway (probably won't get 20's). And there are only a couple of Wizard spells where you slide. Can someone explain why the Ring is so great?

- Expected the trade tokens to be worth more. Interesting that Dwarven Steel ($20.50) went for more than Elven Bismuth ($16.50). Possibly because the steel is used in the trade combos. But getting enough uncommons can be irritating at times. Even the Oil of Enchantment (uncommon armor is a lot more useful than uncommon weapons) went for just $27.00.

- There was that bizarre Polymorph Bear potion that went for $16.50. And I'm amazed that a Mage Armor scroll went for $11.50.

- There have also been several cases when healing (Potions and Scrolls of Cure Lt Wounds) went for just $1-$3, much less than I expected.

So what do you think about recent eBay results?
So what do you think about recent eBay results?

I think the Amulet of Oak might be worth quite a bit to a collector (as opposed to a game-player, who would evaluate its relative worth based on what it adds to game-play)... so I am not surprised there.

I think someone has a fair bit of spare pocket change... despite the economy. =D
Legally... its questionable. Morally... its disgusting. Personally... I *like* it.

Study the stock market and you'll have your answer Eric. People are buying on emotion right now.

I will speak on behalf of the guy that bought the Necklace of the Oak, because I'm that guy:

1. I didn't buy tokens this year, because going to GenCon was not a certainty until the last minute
2. AoW and HoP are considerably more money, as stated above the AoW went for double the Necklace
3. I haven't seen a HoP for sale, otherwise I would have bought that instead.

That being said, I spent what I did because its the first of its kind I had seen, and I didn't want to screw around with eBay for like 2 or 3 weeks looking for another one to bid on. The fact that it stacks with the Girdle and Gauntlets seems like a good deal all the way around. Some of the other consumables going for ridiculous prices did surprise me, and I wish I had the chance to see the healing before it sold, but oh well.

Sometimes convenience has a price, and those that want convenience will pay for it.

PS: If anyone is selling Full Plate of Absorption or a +1 Tower Shield, PM me and we can talk $$$

I was surprised by the necklace price too but I can see why now that I think about it. Since the only way to get one is to have an AoW and I suspect most of those people will just hold on to their Amulet of the Oak (like me), there may not be a lot of them to buy. Of course I didn't think about it at the time, I was being all nice and let someone borrow my AoW on my second run since I already had the Oak. Lucky guy!

Sure, except for the Barbarian the Necklace has the same effect as the Girdle of Hill Giant Strength, and is rarer, so I could easily see $100+ for it.

for the necklace of the oak, at first it stayed at only $20-30, and i was shocked that it was staying so low. as already mentioned, just look at the amulets you compared it to: HoP (sells for ~250, if you can find one for sale), MoG (sold for 200), AoW (not sure on price, but guaranteed more expensive since this year it gets you the necklace of the oak).
and hell, i have a HoP, AoW, and 3 MoG, and got 2 of the necklace of the oak at true realm...neither is for trade because those were immediately added to party equipment (two torcs +2AC are the last two amulets...i have equipment lined up for every class except monk).

ring of wizardry went for 200? wow...just, wow.
i actually didnt expect the trade tokens to be that expensive at first...but then i thought about what it takes to get them (enough tokens in total to have those sub-sets of 25), and figure that is close. much more and anyone buying bulk can turn all their commons into enough money to just buy another bulk order.

I wasn't surprised the Necklace was low for so long, I had a LOT of last-minute bidding on mine after they were low for nearly 7 days. There are usually 10 or more people watching the top auctions, and several of those are trying to snipe it at the end. I'm seeing the same thing on the current auctions for the most part.

Keep in mind, prices now may not be prices later, and Mike is probably wise to sell some tokens now.

Necklace of the Oak was not the only one given away for wearing the AoW at True Realm. I forget the name of the other one I was given. (I hope the coach didn't gip me!)

AoW at the Directors Cut got you the Harpy Medallion I think.

I'm just selling some tokens I don't need so I can buy more from True Dungeon. Win-win. :-)
