TOPIC: Questions regarding a few 2008 tokens

Re: Questions regarding a few 2008 tokens 14 years 11 months ago #13

Sounds good. Glad we asked the questions.

Now here's the next one. For the Bracelets of Zephyr, was the final decision that it must be two spells from the "character card" or can one be a scroll?

Two spells from the character card.

Is it an over-generalization to say that:

a) no token adds to a spell's "to hit" except: 1) the Ring of Wizardry
b) no token adds to a spell's damage except: 1) the Ring of Focus, 2) Greater Mistletoe
c) no token adds to the amount of healing from a healing spell except: 1) the Ring of Focus
d) a spell only does double damage on a natural 20 when using: 1) the Ring of Wizardry
e) a spell never does double damage on a 19, and nothing can make a spell "Keen"
f) no token modifies a spell cast from a token. Only changes to a target's AC and saving throws apply, since they are not modifications to the spell being cast.

Broad generalizations make good guidelines, as long as they are true in all cases except the listed exceptions.

The Gloves do NOT add any "to hit" bonuses for Wizard's missile to-hit rolls. Nor do Potions of Cat Grace.

Color me sad =( Still I must remind myself, its True Dungeon, not D&D. There are similarities, but not every rule carries forward.

In the heat of a dungeon, it all gets jumbled to hell anyway.

So where does Bard Songs (either with or without Regular/Widseths/or Lyre Instrument) fit in, since they at minimum add +1 to hit and +1 to damage?
How about Scroll: Bless with its +1 bonus to hit?

Since, both apply to all attacks (ranged and missile), would it not also benefit ranged attack spells (Rays and Arrows)?

How about such spells cast from scrolls (since the user still needs to slide)?

So I would say the above may be an over generalization and these questions need to be addressed in an updated token guide.

I can't see them making an exception for bless either. I get the impression the idea is to separate spells from melee/range combat as far as bonuses go. What applies to one should not apply to the other and vice versa.

That is true and due to the differing nature of the effects (on paper or computer rather than in life action), TD should still strive to simulate reality as closely as possible.
Of all the traits of humanity, there is only one we do not share with other species, which sets us apart and makes us unique
-- the ability to imagine.

The thing about the spells is that the ones on the card and the token scolls are not slid to hit the monster's AC. They have their own target number for the slide which is defined by the spell (for example, Melf's says you have to slide a 13 or better). The Ring of Wizardry modifies THAT number (using example, an 11 or better).

If you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

So, ruling out Bard's song and Bless (and still looking for any other exceptions)

a) no token, card spell1, or special power2 adds to a spell's "to hit" except: 1) the Ring of Wizardry
b) no token, card spell, or special power adds to a spell's damage except: 1) the Ring of Focus, 2) Greater Mistletoe
c) no token, card spell, or special power adds to the amount of healing from a healing spell except: 1) the Ring of Focus
d) a spell only does double damage on a natural 20 when using: 1) the Ring of Wizardry
e) a spell never does double damage on a 19, and nothing can make a spell "Keen"
f) no token, card spell, or special power modifies a spell cast from a token. Only changes to a target's saving throws apply, since they are not modifications to the spell being cast.
g) changes to a target's AC do not affect the AC needed to hit, for a token spell or card spell requiring a slide vs. a fixed AC.
h) spells are neither "ranged" nor "melee". Modifications to ranged or melee attacks do not apply.

1 a card spell is a spell cast from the player's character card. (This category needs a name, since saying "spells" vs. "scrolls" is horribly confusing since scrolls are spells.)
2 special power includes any non-spell effect, such as Bard's song.

Next iteration.
I thought I read somewhere that Bracers of Archery affected spells like Melf's Acid Arrow. Am I misremembering?
