TOPIC: Effect stacking...

Effect stacking... 15 years 2 weeks ago #1

I was looking in the token guide trying to figure out if there was a general 'effect stacking' rule. It seemed to indicate that different sources (tokens) with the same effect would stack, unless otherwise stated. If this is the case, then in theory if someone were to use the Fey Wand, Scroll: Color Spray, and Scroll: Hypnotic Pattern the monster would be at -7 to all saves. Is this correct?

Indeed, things do stack if not otherwise stated.

Unless there's a rule somewhere I don't know about (I don't know the new tokens very well), then yes, what you're saying sounds correct.

However, identical items do not stack (two +1 rings of protection do not give you +2 to AC).
What I haven't figured out yet, however (perhaps just because I am tired), is what a monster needs a saving through for...
Oh yeah...there are a few things that say "Fort save vs 12" or ... on the tokens. As monsters generally have plusses to their saving throws, taking them down 7 saving throw points would be great.
Yes, taking them down 7 would be awesome, however it would take the coordinated effort of the wizard, druid, and bard to do so. (that is assuming that you wanted to take them down 7 in a single round) It may only be worth it if you plan to use an arrow of slaying or something. Although if there are characters using Ring of Sanctuary or Hat of Escape, it may be very helpful also.

I don't know if this was ruled on before, but does Ektdar's Tool stack with MW Thieves' Tools?

Also, for items that halve damage and items that subtract damage, what is the order of operations? Say you have -2 damage vs. spells, and half damage from fire, and save for half. The fire spell does 9 damage. You save for half and that's 4 or 5 (round up or down?), then half damage is 2 or 3, then -2 leaves you with 0 or 1 damage. If subtraction comes first, then 9 goes to 7, then 3 or 4, then halved again for 1 or 2. It's not a huge difference in that case, but it some cases it may be.
Hard to say they stack - as each has a different abilty.

They CAN be used together...which means that if someone walks up to a TBox and says I have the TOOL - they start in the middle of the path.

Now should they fail that run - they can use TTools and start over - AT THE NORMAL STARTING spot...and attempt the trap again.

Now should someone try to do the trap and and fail - then want to use the tools and TOOL - that is OK - they just can not use the E TOOL twice on the same box - methinks.

I told the coaches to do the basic addition and subtration first, then do the division. I will discuss with Jeff and come up with a ruling that will make it into the guides.

Dave

You mensa people talking higher math again?

Coaches were not told to do X then Y....we just add up AC and To hit/ Damage...all that 1/2 fire and -10 this that is for DMs to figure out.

Sorry, one of the coaches asked, I figured it would be passed along.

Dave
