TOPIC: What is the value of platinum?

What is the value of platinum? 16 years 8 months ago #1

I was wondering if there is a measurable way to gauge what the platinum color adds to a chip?

In practical terms: nothing. It is simply for coolness.

In trading terms: possibly, quite a bit. To a token collector who is trying to make a "plat set," they'll trade just about anything within reason to get a particular item they need. I don't know if Douglas has been tracking woodie vs gold chip vs plat chip for the price guide, but I'm pretty sure they haven't been around long enough for a good sample to be taken that can reliably tell us what the value difference is.

I have been tracking when ever possible and believe it or not, there has been quite a bit of data on Plats vs. Gold. At the high end, Plats are running 2x their gold counter parts. At the low end closer to 1.2x. As a starting point 1.5x is reasonable and you can adjust up for permenants and down for consumables.

Hope this helps. :)

There have been cases of people are trading at/over 3x guide value for some plats...so I would say 2x guide for most RARES is pretty much a minimum. IF you have a top RARE PLAT...maybe 3x and up is possible to the collector or person trying to get something they really really want.

To match what Lionheart said - I have a few PLATs I will burn up this year if needed in the course of a dungeon run...once you get like 4-5 of any given one - they are pretty much just like GOLDS.

Based on what I saw here on the forums, when someone offered to pay 2x Gold for the Plat version, other people were jumping out of their chairs at the deal. This indicates that the minimum is probably less than 2x.

Apologies, were we talking GP for the token or GP VALUE for the token?

I gave 3x guide value for the +1 PLAT longsword I traded for...I think John too had some trades well over 2x in VALUE...

Sorry for not making that clear - there is a very well known distinction between getting GP for something and trading GP VALUE in items!

From the trades that I've done, the increased value of the PLATs was almost entirely due to people willing to pay a premium to complete their set. Now that it seems that everyone that was working on completing a set has finished them (or at least is not actively out there looking anymore), I would expect that the PLAT value will drop to just a small premium over regular tokens (maybe 1.1 or 1.2), and consumables might be about the same value. When I've listed PLATs available for trade, I've never had a single person look to trade for them if they weren't completing a set.

By the way, in case I never mentioned it before, I am always interested in Plat permenants at 1.5x the Gold counterpart. (We can figure out the .5 later).

If anyone has any Plat perm that they are looking to trade, please PM me.

Thanks!
-D
I guess that sets the price for PLAT Permanents at 1.5, at least until Douglas has bought his fill.

Well, that assumes no one is offering more, either here on the forums or at the Con. I'd be surprised if I am offering the most. :|

I'll rephrase that to the bottom of the price range is 1.5 =)
