TOPIC: Curious about critical strike immunities

Curious about critical strike immunities 1 year 9 months ago #1

How often do we come across monsters that are immune to critical hits? Is the bead of guided strike worth it for a fighter that is wielding a hammer that crits on 19-20?

Thanks in advance!

Monsters such as Undead and Golems/Constructs are immune to Criticals - and those are common opponents over the years. Some years you may get more use out of it than others - but in general you'll find it useful in at least one of the adventures in a particular season.

There's no guarantee on what future adventures will feature - but odds are you will like having it in your arsenal.

It really depends on the adventure being played. For example, an undead themed adventure is going to have a crit immune enemy at least once, if not multiple combats.

Even if the theme doesn’t suggest it, you never know when a construct or plant might pop up. Guided strike isn’t guaranteed to be useful on every adventure, but it’s a safe bet that there’s at least one room in a convention’s worth of modules that would use it.

Now, just compare that to how often you expect to crit ;)

It's more important for rogues for sneak attack and maybe barbarians that have fury. For fighter it depends a lot on what else you already have. There are probably a lot of tokens that are more beneficial before that, but the thrill of having the DM throw in some flavor verbage when you get a crit can be worth more than a little bit higher average damage per monster.

Ballpark, I’d say 1 in 10 combats has a critical immune. Ballpark, you’ll get 3 rounds of combat per room, depending on the party and difficulty. If you think you’ll Crit more than once per combat, it may be worth it.

Personally, I don’t think it comes up often enough that I crit in a room with a crit immune that I would worry about using a slot for it.

As others have said, it is more important for rogues to get sneak damage. But if you can crit often enough then ask yourself one question: how upset do you get when the DM says the monster can't be crit? How happy will it make you to crit anyway?
this is not a signature.

For a fighter I would agree with Endgame that it likely doesn't come up often enough to be worth it vs other UR's that I would pick up if I was just starting out. For a rogue I would disagree. Since being able to sneak attack is not dependent on actually sliding (or being bumped) into a 20. Stating this for a newish rogue. If they have the bracers or charm that do the same thing then I would take a different UR from 2022.
You either discover a star or you don't. You arrogant punk.

From the modules I have, 2017-2019, I counted 8 of 26 combat rooms with crit/SA immunities. 5 of those were from 2017 though. During VTD it seems like it came up at least every other adventure, with undead themed runs having multiple rooms with immunities.

Thanks Basic! That’s the data I was curious about.

Thanks for the insight from everyone else, good thoughts for the newb fighter! :)

Guided Strike is most important for Rogues. It is helpful, but not as important, for Dwarf Fighters (who do triple damage on a 20 critical hit) and for Dwarf Fighters/Fighters who have Viv’s and can crit on 19-20.

NB: A Barbarian could wear the Bracers of Guided Strike, but can’t wear the Bead, which is limited to DF/F/Rogue only. And there’s a lot of competition in the wrist slot these days.
