TOPIC: New wands and class restrictions

New wands and class restrictions 5 years 2 months ago #1

While sitting back and sipping on a nice whiskey I began to think about wand usage. Yes whiskey and wands go together it seems.....

The different wands in TD can be used by different classes, makes sense after all. While I can understand clerics/druids using only defensive/healing wands and wizards using offensive wands, bards able to use both. With the new wand changes this year (and last) all wands so far are offensive since they deal various amounts of damage. Bards able to use commons, druids/clerics uncommon and wizards using rares, but they are all offensive. While the bard should be the Jack of all Trades here, why doesn't the rogue class get some wand love?

Wasn't Use Magic Device a skill?

Or have I had a bit too much whiskey 🥃 for tonight and I missed a different post that this was discussed and dismissed as crazy talk?

But another thought was why restrict the amount of damage each class can do with a wand? Does it make much difference what class is using their turn to blast away with a wand? Best a bard can do is base damage 3? Druid/cleric is 5 and wizards at 8.

So, I don't know if there was any actual discussion on the forums regarding whether wands should only be offensive, or any announcement of a design decision thereof.

That being said, the last wand printed that wasn't a pure offensive wand was printed way back for 2014:

Also according to token DB, Rogues have never had a wand they can use. This makes some sense if you look at the 'design' of the classes in TD: only caster classes have had wand usage printed for them in the last several years. No spells == no wands.

One concern about having healing wands with the current rules is that the wand has essentially unlimited charges in the room it is used in. One healing wand could heal the entire party to full HP.

I wonder if anyone is going to use a wooden Wand of Cure Light Wounds under the current rules. I have a few of them but don't want to use any of them up.

Personally I could see myself using a Wand of Cure Light Wounds on a nightmare run or if someone talked me into a Epic run. Still I think it’s good there are not too many of them out there to cause problems.

Those wands are apparently now worth about 1kGP less than a Wish Ring. Maybe more, actually, because they don’t take up a ring slot.

Maybe in functionality, but I don’t think anyone really uses wish rings for anything other than wishing to pay 15k less gold for a legendary

I agree. You beat me to it. I was going to edit it to say “as powerful.”
