TOPIC: Scroll Token Thought

Scroll Token Thought 5 years 5 months ago #1

I was thinking, since Scrolls seem to be pretty underpowered in many cases, what if they were treated kind of like Wands are now. What if, when you cast a Scroll, you could use it repeatedly in the room, and turn it in at the end of the room. Maybe they could only be used repeatedly during combat, and just once if not in combat, to avoid issues like healing scrolls being used an infinite amount of times. :)

Your premise seems flawed to me.

Scrolls are inherently more powerful than Wands. Search TDB for “Lightning.” In exchange for being one-shot vs charged, scrolls routinely either do more damage, hit more targets, or allow no save.

Since the dawn of time (or D&D, anyway) scrolls were always one-shot and wands always had charges. Recent wand rule changes don’t alter that dynamic at all. This suggestion would change it biggly.

Even though I'm still some what new, I do agree with Brad. The roll of scrolls seems well defined in relation to their power/effect. I agree with several of the other threads in regard to wand cost/expediture rules change but I am reserving my final opinion until I try my MoMM next year with the rule change. What I would like to see, to possibly add another old school D&D element to the game would be a new item or category. Staves of healing were big in my old games, they could be the item to fit the previous wand model. Say a Stave of Cure Light Wounds, usable once per room. Seperate item category subject to it's own rules? Just an idea....

Keep scrolls the way they are.

When you read a spell from a scroll the scroll becomes a blank page afterwards.

That's the way it's always been and that's the way it should stay.

I agree it probably shouldn't be done, as it would make Scrolls & Wands pretty similar, but it's still a fun discussion during a slow time on the forums. ;)
