So I am looking up to mount "Transmute Charm of Avarice". I'm packing my bags, kissing my wife goodbye. I know the journey will be long and quite costly. As I walk out the door I take a look back and understand the all the good this legendary item will bring my family as well as my future guild. Just steps out the door, only moments into beginning my epic adventure, I hear my wife yell from behind me ..."And bring me back one too..!" Alas the life of married dungeon delvers :silly: . I go back inside and grab a extra pair of socks. Its going to be a long trip.

Pardon my silliness. So as a new player I have been working hard to collect intentionally for my wife and myself to hold our own with a group for Hardcore. We have full Rares with a couple UR's. We are looking to jump into the deep end and feel obtaining CoA's is the best opportunity that will help us as well as a future potential group that we hope to run with in the TD community. Now starting this endevour from scratch after everything has rotated out of print brings a unique challenge. I have a modicum of experience for the TD secondary market and can understand the cost of $1200 - $1400 per CoA. It's difficult currently to justify dropping that kind of cash on two tokens.

Question: How did you all craft / obtain your CoA's?

With looking at the two recipes towards CoA I feel my best bet is to start with getting 2 Charms of Good Fortune. They are the latest component that is needed in Recipe 1 and can benefit others with their CoA's in a run. I feel that way my wife and I can still provide that TE bump without having currently the CoA. CoGF also are the cheapest out of the main 3 components and could be reasonably saved for / traded for by a beginner (via relic/ something more valuable than a that year UR). From there I guess it will have to be what I can come across. Both HoP and RoR are rather valuable and seems quite out of reach for a beginner. Once I have my wife's CoA made (I always kit my wife out first) then I can work on the second.

Know that I am aware that this will take much time and effort. Hence I look to the community for wisdom so I can avoid the pitfalls of beginner collecting.

Thank you in advance!

I am in the same boat (neither my husband nor I have a CoA), so I don't have any advice to offer, but I will follow this thread with interest!

Honestly, at this point it may be cheaper to buy one outright rather than buying the components piecemeal.
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

I like your style!

After CoA was announced, the prices of its ingredients were:

Horn of Plenty: ~$500
Ring of Riches: $250
Charm of Good Fortune: $150
Amulet of Treasure Finding: In print PyP so ~$100

Most people who had Horn, Ring, and Charm from collecting in the past made it with recipe 1, as that was considerably more efficient.

People who didn't have the whole set of three scooped up RoR and CoGF for their point values in Recipe 2 when possible, and rounded things out with AoTF.

Some folks just bought 7 AoTF.

At this point, I pretty strongly suspect you're going to find it cheaper to buy a CoA than craft one. The ingredients of CoA's prices are set more or less by their usefullness in crafting a CoA, and Horn of Plenty is scarce enough that you can't count on ever putting together Recipe 1 at any price.

If you are set on crafting it, I would start looking to target Ring of Riches under $450 and Charm of Good Fortune under $300 to minimize your point cost.

AoTF is out of print and announced to be part of a distant future URTE transmute I believe (like... 2025?), so it will go at a premium relative to its CoA recipe point value.

Looks like I already missed the boat on the next one. I better start swimming to catch up!

That's to the best of my recollection, always in motion the future is.

I've got a few AoTF set aside in case there is a transmute, but I think it's not a sure thing it will ever happen.

There is a decent chance if it _did_ ever happen the recipe might be similar in allowing a cheaper recipe for AoTF, but still allowing you to get the transmute through a more expensive recipe without it.

Having made the leap into the CoA club this year I agree withe Harlax and Matthew, buying it outright is an easier and probably cheaper solution. I doubt you would be able to pick up the base TEs for less than $1300 unless you were keeping a close eye on auctions and trades. Additionally, by doing it piecemeal you would lose the neck and a ring slot as you acquired the individual pieces.

Similar position here. Trying to craft the CoA from scratch (or starting from an AoTF in my case) isn't really economically reasonable. Your best bet is to pick up an Amulet of Treasure Finding for each person at the current price and enjoy the treasure boost until the next transmute is ready to go and hope that it makes the new one as much easier as having horn of plenty made the current one.

Embrace the idea that there will never be a way to catch up to the longer-time players in stats (treasure included) without dropping many thousands of dollars and aim lower.

I strongly suspect when the next big treasure transmute is ready something will significantly change about how treasure is handled overall, but those with CoA will probably still be able to max out 50-100% higher than those without.

My group has been playing since the very start, so we had all the individual components to trade in. I agree with others that it might be cheaper to buy the CoA outright - but not necessarily. You might be able to get two CoGF and one RoR plus the trade goods for less than a CoA, it would be pretty close.

You're absolutely right. The only way to trade up is to be diligent and use my limited collection to knock down the overall cost. Sadly because its year one of collecting all I have is

Orb of Dragonkind 2017
4th Tooth of Cavdar
and soon a Eldritch kilt (though with the proposed changes I don't know how many people will be overly interested)

You bring up a valid point that is both realistic and logical. Knowing that there may be a proposed TE Megazord coming down the line does change a perspective from a rear view to a futuristic. Looking at CoA and the CoGF route was community focused and would allow us to get into runs with people and assist in our newbie way of them getting a TE bump as well.

But you are right... the rent may be too high!
