TOPIC: First 1k 2018 - Looking for exchange tips

First 1k 2018 - Looking for exchange tips 5 years 8 months ago #1

So I bought my first 1k for my family. I opened and sorted all of the tokens and I am now in the process of getting ready to send in to exchange. Any tips or veteran advice on what to keep, what to look out for, and what are some best practices?

What is common practice on shredding platinum?

What about items used for transmutes (Pendant of the Boar, Pants of the Lynx, etc..)

Thanks!

Here is my humble opinion based on doing the same kind of thing, and then regretting some of the stuff I sent in to mulch:

Keep your lenses of heimdall sight That token is too good for a rare.

Keep your Ioun Stone Norse Opal . And your Ioun Stone Agate Orbs Also great for low-mid level builds I think

Keep your Wand of Thor's Fury you'll need 5 each for your wizards! You'll also need 5 Wand of Thor's Favors for your clerics and druids

Keep your Gauntlets of the Midguard Serpent , and hopefully you have a stack of bezoar charms and rings of dark health too

I also made sure I Kept a ring of stunning fist, and some of the bliss bull items cause they seem good. I kept all my scroll of Odin's Blessings as well cause I like stuff like that.

There are probably others that people can chime in with. These are just the ones that I kept wishing I had a few more of when I was outfitting a party with reasonably priced stuff.

I kept enough of the transmute items to do the transmutes I wanted to do, and then a few extras to trade later. At gencon these seemed a bit easier to trade outside the dungeon than other random Rares and such.

Personally I place no value on platinum and just send it all in to be mulched, but I can't speak for others. I know there are a few platinum collectors here on the board, but they are looking for older items, and usually get the new stuff on their own with their own orders.

I'm sure some more experienced people will have other/better advice!

So, I would strongly recommend acquiring a 2nd ISSN and 2nd Kilt of tavernbane somehow eventually.

Also, know that the one UR you get from your 1K pack is a random one, not necessarily one you get to choose.

Thanks for the heads up, the second ISSN is happening before GHC. I was just posting what I received from the order for Ion. What are your tips from turning in tokens?

It depends on your goals going forward. If you're looking to trade or resell some tokens, I agree with the above.
Lenses of Heimdall Sight are amazing at rare.

Keep some of both beads. It could be something nice to give to or trade to newer players who might have an empty slot.

The 2 ioun stones mentioned are good to keep.

The class specific uncommon tokens are nice as something to trade or donate to newer players as well.

Also consider what, if anything, you want to work towards transmuting. I think the blessed tempest gloves are incredible, and would make one of those if you don't have one yet, especially for the wizard.

Most people consider gold and platinum the same in terms of cost. There are so many of each floating around now that the days of different costs are probably behind us. keep the ones you like to look at more for yourself.

I generally hold onto my rares that make the basic things (plank, silk, stone) until I have need of those items.

If the wizard will use scrolls, keep any that allow for multiple targets especially.

One bit of advice that I can give you is that you don't have to do it this year. I'll much last year's tokens this year, and this year's tokens next year. That gives me a whole year/season to determine what I want to keep.

You bring up some great points. My goal is to intentionally collect for the long term. My wife played a few years ago. Now we are playing together. Practically starting from scratch. We want to engage with the community and try to play/volunteer at a few of the Cons a year.

Yea... coming in at the end of a transmute season does have me at a predicament. Do I try to go for something that is rotating in a few months or hold out for and pay $$$ for something in the future.

All of the items you are PYPing are great choices. The Libram might be the cheapest going forward.

One option would be to bid on PYPs in one of the auctions going on or coming up rather than buying your own. You just get the UR rather than all of everything.

You aren't really at the end of anything, unless you want a 2017 transmute.

All this is opinion but...

These are 2018 tokens I think could appreciate to be worth more than their transmute value:

Rare:
+1 Bliss Hammer (usable by all and it's damage wheel is +1 higher than typical)
Bead Whole Vision (depends on future beads)
Belt of the Berserker (best rare belt)
Blessed Wind Gloves (the transmute is good and affordable)
Bliss Bull set (STR boosters are sought after)
Gantlet's of the Midgard Serpent (as soon as there is readily obtainable -3 from poison these are the best rare gloves)
Lenses of Heimdall Sight (nearly as good as UR Goggles of Instant Analysis)
Wand of Thor's Fury (really depends on 2019 wands)

UC:
Abyssal Lenses of Taunting
Archer's Buckler
Bead Unseen Vision
Wand of Thor's Favor

I don't see any particular demand for platinums over gold backed (I have been listing platinum tokens for sale for several years and no one seems to want them let alone pay a premium).

How I decide what to keep for transmutes are: could this token be part of a best in slot build at the UR level or better? Blessed Wind Gloves make this cut, the Pendant of the Boar and Pants of the Lynx do not.

Of course, build out the best slot coverage you can for the classes you play before sending anything in!

Tokens of note in this regard this year not mentioned above are:

Magnificent Bard's Instrument, Tome of Recall (Bard)
Masterwork Thieves Tools (Rogue)
Bliss Bull Set (all who can use it)
Gloves of Wrath (Bard, Cleric, Druid, and Wizards)
Medallion of Energy (wizards)

In general, tokens that affect the "party card" are more valuable than ones that do not, and there general preferred order (according to me...) is:

STR or melee hit&damage boosters
Melee hit or damage boosters
Spell damage&healing boosters
"Free movement"
Ranged hit or damage boosters.
HP boosters
DEX boosters
save boosters
"immunity to surprise"
AC boosters

I would say Kilt of Tavernbane (soon to be out of print) and Ioun Stone Silver Nugget (soon to be out of print) stand the best change of being in demand for trading up or sideways in the future from this class of URs.

Slotless tokens that do anything useful are generally in demand, so Pouch of Tulz and Ash's Death Pouch might be good pickups.

Ring of the Eel is an unusual effect that is in wide demand - although it could see its fortune plummet quickly by duplication of a similar or superior effect.

Medallion of Mystic Mouth is a build-around token that is shortly to be out of print, if you'll be playing the Human Wizard for sure I'd strongly consider picking one up as it's a free +10 damage each turn (+12 with Ioun Stone Fluorite cube).

But, TL;DR - pick up Kilt of Taverbane and/or Ioun Stone Silver Nuggets and then trade for what you want later if you change your mind.

The Kilt of Tavernbane (2017) will combine with the Kilt of Fatherbane (2018) and a 2019 token to be determined to create an Eldritch item - which is pretty much a safe bet for long term value.
