TOPIC: I Wish Wish Rings Were Used For Wishes

I think the Wish ring's ability to grant various effects is super awesome, cool, thematic, wonderful, etc..

However, I have never seen, or even heard, of a wish ring being used in a dungeon in the last 10 years (I saw one almost get used in a GT run once).

I think this is for two reasons:

a. Due to the value of a Wish ring in a Legendary transmute recipe, spending a Wish is worth between $140 and $280.

b. To expend a wish in the dungeon, I guess you'd need to equip it? Leaving a ring slot open for a "maybe I'll do this" effect is a pretty huge drawback.

I think it would be neat to generally increase the wonder of TD with Wish Ring abilities, and so I was hoping some revision of their effects could be granted, here are some thoughts:

First:

Allow a wish ring to be cashed in outside the dungeon, sort of like a RoSP. Cashing it in would provide the user with a voucher to be redeemed within the dungeon if the situation merited it.

This would mean you could get your wish ring effect on a run without equipping the ring.

The vouchers could have expiration dates on them, probably 1 season of TD, to keep the number outstanding manageable and traceable to avoid counterfeiting.

Second:

Some alteration of the effects available from the wish ring to make them more appealing to be cashed in, I'd propose the vouchers have these abilities:

* Revive all dead party members to life with 1 HP, heal all living party members to full HP (no action, may be done by dead player)
* Resurrect/restore character killed whose body is lost
* Allow redeemer to equip a single item that does not impact the party card or effect slots as a slotless item for remainder of TD season (max 1 such effect per player at any time)
* Allow redeemer to gain the GT bonus of this season for remainder of TD season
* Give any character +5 Damage for entire dungeon (melee, ranged, spell) (stackable)
* Give voucher holder +2 damage for remainder of TD season (melee, ranged, spell) (stackable)
* Monsters fail save checks against voucher holder unless they roll a 20 for remainder of TD season
* Redeem voucher to draw 40 tokens from 1 treasure box
* Redeem voucher for 10,000 GP

I think the "Redeem voucher for 10,000 GP" is key - as it would allow people to cash in their Wish rings, carry around their vouchers, and then towards the end of the season if they didn't find a good opportunity to use their wish, get back most of the GP value they would have had towards a recipe.

Any thoughts?

I've seen a Wish Ring used once in an Epic difficulty True Grind. And I know someone had one equipped to use on at least one other Epic run of True Grind.

I think your ideas would definitely increase the likelihood of someone using a Wish Ring in dungeon.

I think it would be tough for me to ever use a >$100 token as a consumable, even with improved abilities.

Another direction to attack the situation could be to instead of making wishes more powerful, make expended wish rings more valuable.

If wishes remained the same, but expended wish rings were worth 10,000 GP towards an Legendary recipe, then we might see more wishes get used due to the wish "cost" of 5,000 GP.

I agree with you in principle.

1. I only have RFBs on my quest to get one of each UR. Odds of me ever using a rare Runestone are zero, because I’m cheap about the weirdest things. (Although, if Planks stay at the current price of can’t-give-then-away, maybe I’ll break down and use a few.) Odds of me using a Wish Ring in game for any reason whatsoever are even less. But maybe that’s just Fiddy and me.

2. Seems like DMs don’t carry punches anymore.

3. I could see them used more for metagame purposes, like “play one adventure free, as Prestige class,” or “may buy up to 10 tix at regular price for one run before event reg opens,” or “draw X treasure.”

3a. Given a Wish Ring is worth about three Gen Con tickets (or four elsewhere), and since the TC cap will be 21 next year, “X=25” is way out of date. “X” should probably be at least three times that.

IMO the easiest way to get more wish rings used would be to let "used" rings be turned in for legendary recipes.

Yep. That's about the only way I would ever consider using one in a dungeon.

Yes, the late Chip / Lotus Blossom once used a Wish Ring in Epic True Grind.

I recall Rob F wore a Wish Ring for True Horde last year (against the Jeffgorgon) just in case he needed it. He didn't end up using it though.

It's rare enough seeing someone use a UR Special in Grind, let alone a Wish Ring!

BTW: What were the UR Special effects this year in the main dungeon of GenCon?

I almost debated using the Special token at the Lorigorgorgon but I don't know if I would have used it for anything else and wish ring would have been overkill. I think you should be allowed to turn in a wish ring without equipping it.

maybe we should give the wish ring a bonus if it is equiped... Maybe like +2 to all saves, or something like that, so it wouldn't be a lost slot if you did use it.
