I’ve found myself in the undesirable position of armorer for my TD group. This means that the bulk of our token purchases come out of my pocket. It can be a thankless job sometimes, but I can’t complain too much as I’m the one with the token-addiction. The group is now up to 4 members; I introduced one of my best friends to the game last week and he loved it.
There’s zero chance that I’d be able to buy Charm of Avarice for everyone. Something that is possible, however, is picking up another Amulet of Treasure Finding or two. Right now, we have:
1x CoA
2x AoTF
3x ISSN.
This was all good when we were a group of three. Moving forward - someone is going to be left out. I’m left trying to decide whether it’s worth it to buy +1 or +2 AoTF. The price has spiked quite a bit in the last eight months or so. This time last year, you could still find them for ~$180.
This is where Jeff’s proclamation comes in -
"Assuming Gen Con and TD is still around in about ten years (2026), the Amulet of Treasure Finding will be used in a transmuted token recipe to make a better treasure-enhancing token. It will be combined with whatever TE-tokens come out in 2023 and 2025."
I am 95% sure that I should pick up at least one additional Amulet (and an ISSN). This would ensure that all 4 players in our group have a solid number of treasure pulls whenever we run a dungeon. As far as a second one, I’m not so sure. Some information I’m searching for is how the original transmute for Charm of Avarice worked. The first recipe was:
Horn of Plenty
Ring of Riches
Charm of Good Fortune
6,000 GP in Reserve bars
And Option 2 was:
1× Alchemist’s Ink
4× Alchemist’s Parchment
1× Aragonite
7× Darkwood Plank
5× Dwarven Steel
4× Elven Bismuth
2× Enchanter’s Munition
1× Golden Fleece
3× Minotaur Hide
4× Mystic Silk
2× Oil of Enchantment
1× Philosopher’s Stone
10,000 GP in Reserve bars
plus 7 points worth of tokens (any combination) using the following values:
1 pt: Amulet of Treasure Finding
2 pts: Charm of Good Fortune
3 pts: Ring of Riches
4 pts: Horn of Plenty
One thing I’ve never understood is whether Horn of Plenty, Ring of Riches, and Charm of Good Fortune were all regular PYPs in their own day. If they were, then I could at least speculate that the next “better treasure-enhancing token” might follow the same recipe scheme.
Horn of Plenty (2007), Ring of Riches (2011), and Charm of Good Fortune (2013) were separated by 4 years and 2 years respectively. The Amulet of treasure finding (2015) and the next two announced treasure enhancers will be separated by 8 years and 2 years respectively.
If Amulet ends up being the analog for HoP (now $700+), it would seem prudent to just buy 2x of them now and be prepared to make 4x total CoA2.0’s for all four members of the group. It’s still a very large sum of money, though, and I wanted to see what others thought about the situation.
I’m hoping that some of the collectors that have been around a while could speak to how the first recipe worked and perhaps the price history of CoA (as well as the tokens it was transmuted from). Has CoA always been a $1200-$1400 token? Did the price of the individual parts spike once the recipe was announced?
Thank you for any thoughts you may have on the matter. I’m trying to plan out the next slew of purchases for the team.
