TOPIC: Looking for info on AoTF & CoA recipe

Looking for info on AoTF & CoA recipe 5 years 8 months ago #1

I’ve found myself in the undesirable position of armorer for my TD group. This means that the bulk of our token purchases come out of my pocket. It can be a thankless job sometimes, but I can’t complain too much as I’m the one with the token-addiction. The group is now up to 4 members; I introduced one of my best friends to the game last week and he loved it.

There’s zero chance that I’d be able to buy Charm of Avarice for everyone. Something that is possible, however, is picking up another Amulet of Treasure Finding or two. Right now, we have:
1x CoA
2x AoTF
3x ISSN.

This was all good when we were a group of three. Moving forward - someone is going to be left out. I’m left trying to decide whether it’s worth it to buy +1 or +2 AoTF. The price has spiked quite a bit in the last eight months or so. This time last year, you could still find them for ~$180.

This is where Jeff’s proclamation comes in -
"Assuming Gen Con and TD is still around in about ten years (2026), the Amulet of Treasure Finding will be used in a transmuted token recipe to make a better treasure-enhancing token. It will be combined with whatever TE-tokens come out in 2023 and 2025."

I am 95% sure that I should pick up at least one additional Amulet (and an ISSN). This would ensure that all 4 players in our group have a solid number of treasure pulls whenever we run a dungeon. As far as a second one, I’m not so sure. Some information I’m searching for is how the original transmute for Charm of Avarice worked. The first recipe was:
 Horn of Plenty
 Ring of Riches
 Charm of Good Fortune
 6,000 GP in Reserve bars

And Option 2 was:
 1× Alchemist’s Ink
 4× Alchemist’s Parchment
 1× Aragonite
 7× Darkwood Plank
 5× Dwarven Steel
 4× Elven Bismuth
 2× Enchanter’s Munition
 1× Golden Fleece
 3× Minotaur Hide
 4× Mystic Silk
 2× Oil of Enchantment
 1× Philosopher’s Stone
 10,000 GP in Reserve bars
plus 7 points worth of tokens (any combination) using the following values:
 1 pt: Amulet of Treasure Finding
 2 pts: Charm of Good Fortune
 3 pts: Ring of Riches
 4 pts: Horn of Plenty

One thing I’ve never understood is whether Horn of Plenty, Ring of Riches, and Charm of Good Fortune were all regular PYPs in their own day. If they were, then I could at least speculate that the next “better treasure-enhancing token” might follow the same recipe scheme.

Horn of Plenty (2007), Ring of Riches (2011), and Charm of Good Fortune (2013) were separated by 4 years and 2 years respectively. The Amulet of treasure finding (2015) and the next two announced treasure enhancers will be separated by 8 years and 2 years respectively.

If Amulet ends up being the analog for HoP (now $700+), it would seem prudent to just buy 2x of them now and be prepared to make 4x total CoA2.0’s for all four members of the group. It’s still a very large sum of money, though, and I wanted to see what others thought about the situation.

I’m hoping that some of the collectors that have been around a while could speak to how the first recipe worked and perhaps the price history of CoA (as well as the tokens it was transmuted from). Has CoA always been a $1200-$1400 token? Did the price of the individual parts spike once the recipe was announced?

Thank you for any thoughts you may have on the matter. I’m trying to plan out the next slew of purchases for the team.

While not answering your question, I would say you should definitely get another ISSN, and then prepare for 4 ISGN which will be in the 2019 set.

If you can get 1 or 2 more AoTF, I would do so, assuming you will always have 4 to play with.

There are absolutely no guarantees going forward about any recipe whatsoever unfortunately.

Yes the Horn, ring, and cogf were all regular pups. While plans tend to change so we cant be sure, I suspect Aotf will likely be a safe investment (and you are likely correct in considering it a HOP analog). In terms of the 1st and 2nd receipe, there was a statment made that the HOP would not be reprinted (there is no such statement in place for the Aotf, though I dont suspect any TE will ever be reprinted, but thats just me). The 1st recipie was something of an olive branch to the collectors who had the bought HOPs/RoR/cogf while they were originally in print. The second receipe was a side ways way for new players to get the HOP effect without having to reprint it. I suspect something similar will happen at the end of the current stone cycle. Again anything could happen but I'm sitting on some Aotf just in case.

Thanks for your 2 cents, Wade & Picc.

I just wanted to point out that Jeff did in fact make a proclamation that there will be no AoTF reprint.

Why not just take the easy way out? If you own the equipment, gather up all the treasure pulls in the epilogue room and divide by four. Remainder if any going to you.

I mean, you’re going to end up with the pulls coming back to you anyway, right?

Perhaps deep down, I'm just seeking validation on spending the cash. :P

For real, though - I am just trying to make a more-informed decision. Understanding how CoA worked in the past should help me make a more appropriate plan.

Hi Arnold!

I'd second others that you should jump on getting another ISSN now, before it goes out of print, and be ready to get four ISGN this coming year. Personally, I'd recommend getting another AoTF, since it will get you four treasure pulls every Dungeon for now, and will be able to get you the Transmute in 2026, assuming you also buy the treasure enhancing URs in 2023 and 2025). There's no guarantee that the 2026 Transmute will have an alternate recipe that doesn't include the AoTF. Depending on your finances, you might also consider three more Charms of Good Fortune.

You could also get a fourth AoTF for the 2026 transmute, but since you have a CoA, your fourth AoTF wouldn't actually get you any additional tokens until 2026 since they can't be used together.

Regarding the CoA, the price started out around $1,000, and has gone up some since the AoTF went out of print and increased in price.
