TOPIC: THOT's thoughts: Buff to Oils

THOT's thoughts: Buff to Oils 5 years 11 months ago #1

I have always liked the concept of the oils that we can apply to weapons. With the recent buff to wands does this create precedent to buff oils too? I have a couple really fun oils that I will never use cause I only have one or two of them and don't want them to be consumed.

I am curious to hear how others feel on this matter. Do you use oils or just collect/trade-in? What's your favourite oil?

I think Oils are at the right spot on the power curve for consumables:

Entire dungeon effect: Runestone
Entire room effects: Oils, stat boosting potions
Multi attack effects: Old consumable wands
Single attack effects: Ammunition, Spell Dust, Scrolls, Alchemical Thrown Weapons

Consider that something like a Relic Draco-Lich Claw Charm adds +2 damage, and most oils add more than that (although consumable, and for one room).

If oils become non-consumable then things like Draco-Lich Claw Charm, Ring of the Eel, etc. just become silly - why bother to acquire ring slot UR for the effect of a rare non-consumable oil?

The difference between oils and wands are that oils stack on top of everything else you are doing to boost your attack action, while wands are something you are doing instead of a standard attack action.

I guess I could see something like a "Belt of Oiley Scabbard" - a UR waist slot item that allows you to apply an oil without consuming it?

I think that a bigger problem with oils is that there is so few of them. If we were getting a new oil every year they wouldn't be so hard to use.
