TOPIC: Tokens for newish player/collector

Tokens for newish player/collector 8 years 7 months ago #1

I've been through True Dungeon five times now and after much hemming and hawing I want to get into more playing and collecting. I am just wondering if there are any specific tokens or at least token areas that are recommended people in that category focus on? I already have some plans for picking up URs in the 2015 range when the 2016 packs become available. I have a 1st tooth of Cavadar but that's about it beyond regular rares for now.

What I am asking about is not just things to focus on for being an effective player but also collecting. I am not in it for the money, but as a game player, professional archivist and librarian (and also working on a documentary on the history of dungeons and dragons) am just wondering at what the smart plays might be at this time. The modules were an easy start. And I have all of them from race across greyhawk to the 2014 set. Where to go from here? Living on the east coast limits things a bit unfortunately since Gen Con is the only real viable option for me to play each year.

Id start with a way to get to lv5 (next years ring maybe), then focus on saves and str/dex depending on if your ranged or melee. Casters are a whole different ball of wax.

Greed items like the Aotf are also always good.

Lots of threads from over the years of what tokens are good for X class can be found via search and browsing the class sub forums.

Generally you'll want to look at what class(s) you like to play and search for good (not necessarily BiS [Best in Slot]) tokens that cover those classes if possible.

Some players build for class X and end up with next to almost or no flexibility. To each their own that can lead to problems with class conflicts. I've seen and had issues with players who have gear a single class only and refusing/unable to switch classes and having a roll off.

My build that i've been upgrading is for the most part class independent. Good cloak and ioun stones are a good place to look for upgrades that work for near every class. Find a way for 5th lvl. Medallions are cheap now that the ring transmute is open.

We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

Save $200 and buy a Ring of Heroism is what I'm telling everybody that wants to play :) That is the best $200 you can spend.

Generic advice:

The tokendb at tokendb.com is an invaluable resource.

Every treasure generating token made so far has gone up in value once out of print.

For in game, non-treasure "bang for the buck" rare tokens are where it's at, the general curve is sort of like:
Rare token - $3-$10 - +1
Ultra Rare Token - $100 - +2
Relic Token - $350 - +3
Legendary - $1,200 - +5

Generally tokens that impact things on the party card are in high demand. My subjective order on them is from most to least interesting:
  • STR boosters and/or (hit and damage) boosters
  • Save boosters
  • Damage boosters
  • Hit boosters]
  • Free action
  • DEX/CON boosters
  • AC boosters
  • Immunity to surprise
  • HP boosters

The next category of interest are things that effect a class talent or character ability, like a Bard instrument, the Mad Evoker's Charm, Greater Mistletoe.

The next category of interest are healing consumables and resurrection effects.

Here is my list of all star tokens at rare or below:
Any +1 Weapon your class can equip (some are better than others)
Belt of Ogre Power
Gloves of Ogre Power
Ioun Stone Beryl Prism
Bracers of Frost / Bracers of Fire
Lenses of Treasure Finding
Defender Helm / Shield / Plate
Greater Mistletoe
Druid's Wild Vestments
Plate Armor of Attack
Helm of the Boar
Cap of the Own
Earcuff of Intellect
+2 Cloak of Resistance
Shadow Cloak
Necklace of Natural Armor / Torc ""
Earcuff of Vitality
Earcuff of the Wind
Chainmail of the Vale
Mighty Sling
Mage Robe of the Vale

For most classes, 2 handed melee weapons are great because of:
Ring of Enervation
Ring of Brilliance
Charm of Rampage

If you want to play at investing in tokens, here's a good list of items which have held (or increased in) value:

* ANYTHING which grants more treasure draws.
In the past, Horn of Plenty, Ring of Riches, and Charm of Good Fortune have all gone up in price.
Currently the Amulet of Treasure Finding is high on people's want list. It won't go out of print 'til after 2016 tho, and until then will be worth roughly $100 (ie, the price of a PYP)

* Anything which is a component for an Eldritch Transmute (crafting).
The (now OOP) Rod of 7 Parts Segments went up in value like mad. So did the Rings of Elemental Command.
Currently the Boots of the 4 Winds are being released, with "North" already OOP, and "East" about to be. However, if you can get your hands on those and transmute for Boots of the Four Winds in 2016, it will probably be worth the investment.
The Teeth of Cavadar fall into the same category.

* Ingredient tokens within the current story arc.
Every year has a special Story-Arc transmute which uses ingredients from all the years within that arc. If you gather a bunch of ingredients at the beginning of the arc, you'll find people paying top dollar for them near the end of the arc. But once the deadline for transmuting that Story-arc item is past, the value plummets.

* Items which increase Strength or Damage.
Strength enhancers seem to be King, for building an effective character. So items like Ioun Stone: Onyx Cube, or the Mighty Longbow (which adds your Str to ranged damage) have gone up in value. And while some Relic & Legendary transmutes have dropped in price, the Girdle of Frost Giant Strength, and Surtr's Girdle of Fire Giant Strength, have held their value better than others.

Hope that helps!

I'm in Denver, PA. I'm always up for finding new people to get together with and play games with them.

What do you do with the tokens and the people you get together with? Did you make your own boards or something or just using them as props in other games and things?

They probably play other stuff, but quite a few people have practice boards ;)

At least for the moment you need an IS Amethyst Ovid for that Tooth to be useful.
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky
