I know I'm gonna get flamed, but... 17 years 11 months ago #1

I have to be honest and say that I am quite disappointed with the quality of the tokens this year. For the last few years, the quality of tokens and token bags has steadily decreased. At first, the tokens were uniform and beautiful, and we were at the end of there being multiple colors of bags (Red, Gray, and Black, I believe.) Then, we lost the colored bags, but the tokens were still well made and very clean.

This year is a different story. Irregularly shaped tokens (about 4 different sizes, as far as I can tell), odd, off-center printings, and token bags which are, frankly, sub-standard. The material of the bags is of lower quality, there is no printing on the outside, and I have had no less than three of the strings in the bags just come out entirely (which, considering that I don't really handle the bags that often, is a fairly high amount.)

I like True Dungeon, and I like the tokens. But, one thing that has always impressed me about True Dungeon is the quality of their product in relation to the size of their company. Everything coming out of TD was of the best craftsmanship that one could expect from a company that small - from their products to their game. But, this year has been a significant downturn as far as product is concerned. I certainly hope that this same downturn will not be reflected in the game quality as well.

</$.02>

Josh,

I want to thank you for letting us konw about your concerns. Is there any chance you could get a photo that shows the token irregularities? It sounds like there may be a problem with the company Jeff got them from. I'm sure you can understand that with thousands of tokens to sort and bag, it would be very easy for some bad ones to get thru without being noticed.

I've sent an email to Jeff to let him know about your post.

I can get a photo tonight if Josh can't... I too had a bunch of tokens that had a smaller circumference that "normal"... to be honest as long as the variation is smaller and still fits into a chip tube I really don't care (that's why I didn't say anything before), but if you're looking for examples I can take a take & post a photo tonight when I get home.

Actually Jeff is probably the best to comment, but he and I discussed his displeasure with the token stock this year as well.

As you have pointed out, in the past the quality of the blanks was very high, this year however, size was all over the place. Jeff had to make new templates to compensate. His complaints to the vendor were met with a shrug and a pointer to the disclamer that there is no guarantee for size.

I can't speak for Jeff, but I would imagine he is looking at other options for next year.

Again, I know Jeff is really upset with the quality, but it was too late to change the order, or process, by the time he actually found out there were issues.

Rest assured, that the size variation (quality) of the tokens is not a reflection the rest of the event.

Dave

The size variation didn't bother me that much, but the printing quality certainly did. I had a couple that were double printed or smeared. Looking at the backs, you'd think some were from a year or two ago since they were so faded. (If they didn't have the spider logo, I would have assumed that they had been through the TD store 5 or 6 times.)

When I get home tonight, I'll take some pictures.

I didn't hold it against TA at all - I just figured they tried a new printing company to save a couple of bucks and got burned. They still work just as well in game. I'm just hoping that it doesn't affect their trading value. (I'm sure those trading for their own use rather than actually collecting won't care, but if I get a VR or UR with the same problems I'd be worried about their value dropping.)

To be honest, as a trader, I would accept them as the same value due to their equal value in the game. We shouldn't let a third party that printed poorly hurt the token economy of TD, so I would hope that other traders would agree with me that we would value all tokens from this year exactly the same as we would if they were not flawed. Anyone with me on that?

I agree that value shouldn't diminish. Blem coins and stamps become more valuable over time. Who knows if that smudged short sword might not be traded for a girdle of giant strength some day. I have a short sword (I can make it smudged). Anybody with a girdle of GS want to trade?? Hmmmm?

Jeff should rap the knuckles of the vendor though. I can understand the size variant, but the sloppy print is just a QA problem.

Widseth

We used the same exact vendor for this year's token as always, and then even raised their prices this year. To save the most money we ordered a big load of them -- expecting the same tokens since 2003.

We did not get the same ones. They vary in size and I was not happy with the overall quality of the printing. I tried to get the printer to redo them, but they just laughed in my face -- pointing to the same disclaimer on the order sheet that says the size can vary.

Anyway...we all got screwed by this company, and we will never use them again. We had to totally remake all the screens and templates at considerable cost. I was very happy with how the item side of the tokens turned out -- I think it is the best quality we have ever had. The back side is another story. I thought that maybe I was being a little anal about it -- as I can be picky -- but apparently I was not the only one.

Josh did contact us when he got his tokens (he was the only one to do so), and I had thought we had addressed his problem with a good accommodation. If anyone else feels that they are owed some more tokens or bags let me know.

Again...the sizes and backs should be back to the same quality next year, and the better quality fronts will remain in 2008.

The size differences are annoying only because they alternately stretch and or freely slide around in the token holders.

I've got a few flawed printed tokens, like a heavy repeating x-bow missing some damage number. Those are the only tokens with functional problems. I didn't notice any double strikes or blank tokens, but then again I never bothered to sort through all of the commons.

I haven't noticed any functional flaws, just some smeared items and potions, and I have no weapons that are smeared. But since the money for the tokens was sent mainly to support TD and not for the tokens themselves so much (although I do like them) I do not require additional bags. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration though Jeff. I'm sure we all appreciate your thoughtfulness and we know you strive to make TD the best it can be. We are right there with you.

Anyone want to buy my highly collectable heavy repeating x-bow missprint? It gets better average damage since the missing numbers are low! If the DM can't read it, he'll have to move on to one he can read, giving you more damage for your buck. :P

I completely agree. I was just voicing my concern so that it was heard. The tokens are still highly usable, and as George pointed out, as long as they are SMALLER than the standard, and not larger, than is no concern with storage.
