Being new to TD and having read some of the posts here, I'm wondering what "shops" we can expect to see at 2006 Gen Con Indy.
Can anyone in the crew tell us what shops there will be and, for us newbies, what each shop is likely to carry and how prices are figured (price guide on TD web site? 2x price guide? etc.), and whether or not either or both tokens and cash are excepted as payment for items within the shops?

Thanks guys! I'm just wondering how likely it is that I'll be able to buy things like scrolls of Mage Armor, Boots of Elvenkind, Ring of Evasion, etc..

JKW

The shops will be stocked at the beginning with an assortment of Cs, Rs, and VRs. The prices will proably start at something near price guide and then rapidly shift to supply and demand pressures. No cash.

Your chances of finding any particular token in there is iffy. Your chances of finding a purple in there unless someone just sold one back immediately before, is nonexistant.

It is my understanding that other than a trader with minimal things inside one of the early dungeon rooms, there will be no shops this year. Jeff said TD is gettong out of the trading business and letting the free market take over. That said, I am sure there will be plenty of traders--it might look like the floor of the NYSE when a purple comes out...

The newsletter has some of the details - but indeed TD sponsored shops are not going to exist.

This is actually a very good thing for players in my opinion. Trading should be elevated to a higher level and we actually control more of the economy - which could go either way, but I expect that commons will move towards 0 value and REDS and of course PURPS will climb as UBER collectors try to get what they are after.

What does this mean for the casual player/collector. Expect great deals on just about everything if you have a better RED or PURP for trade...expect commons and rares to be a dime a dozen...

However, if traders are in short supply (due to volunteer shifts / or game events) or get cleaned out, there could be a shortage come the later days of the event.

I agree with Gary, in principle, but healing will likely always be worth something. Gold may become worth nothing, or it may be stable in value, it is very hard to say.

Healing will hold value or go up as I think trader/players will need it as well - so it will most likely dry up and the price will go up.

As for Gold - the one thing no one has brought up as yet...has gold per bag distro changed at all in the SPIDER set? If it has gone down in distro then maybe gold gets a little boost from that???

I don't know how that can be good for the "casual" player... Last year they could buy a bag, and be able to trade their commons and get something more usable in return... if the value of commons goes the way your thinking, then it's going to work against them being able to equip themselves cheaply.

Also, with the purples, I just envision a pack of "collectors" hovering around the exit of the dungeon like birds of prey... it will be interesting to watch I guess

Must've skipped over the shop info in the newsletter. Assumed it'd just be like last year again.

No shops...heh. It's going to be a bloodbath.

George,

I disagree with you that grops will not be able to equip themselves. With most browns, except for possibly cure minor, antitoxin, and flaming hands going for next to nothing, it will be very easy for them to get equipped with browns, far easier than last year. Most parties will be fielding some green and maybe one or two red weapons.

This whole thing sort of depends on the parties sharing their tokens, at least the brows so they can equip a generally normal party. If that breaks down for some reason there's going to be a crapstorm of whining and bitching.

Still sounds like skin a newbie time though.

Well for starters let's look at INDY and SoCal 05...the shops that were there offered players fairly low buy back/trade in value on commons...leather armor was 1-2 gold I believe...so even there you did not do well to trade commons for even commons.

Now where are you going to get the best deal - other players only...so all the common stuff should have been at that level for a year already. Now I can see the argument that - hey I will take 1-2 GP for a suit of Leather...well that option might be gone.

Is this going to be a noobie blood bath - I don't think so - and I hope not. Will someone have to trade out their single RED to equip - I don't think that is even an option as I think the order of the RUN goes like this...

Check-in
go into player only area
get bag of tokens
trade amongst team
trade with NPC (only if needed)
go into dungeon.

So first time token owners may only have to worry about getting ripped by their mates.

After the event - we could see people wanting to unload their entire bag - or treasure gained from the dungeon - and hopefully there will be enough traders to make them good offers and keep them from being taken advantage of.

My best advice to a noob - walk the floor with your tokens and ask several people what they would trade...don't take the first offer without getting 2-3 more.
