TOPIC: Should there be new purples?

I've been sort of pondering this whole ultra-rare thing for a bit and was wondering what everyone thought about the idea of new URs. God knows we had a pretty long raging debate when the 2005b were to come out about what should be included and removed, yet I don't seem to recollect a similar mashup about the purps. Looking at the options, the only ones I can't support are the extremes. I really like the idea of URs being avaliable in the dungeons and I really don't want to see a whole new set. Considering the extreme rarity at the moment, I can even see a hold on new UR's until the distribution becomes a bit more balanced and isn't so completely concentrated.

Bring on new URs!!!  Where is that +2 mace???  Or how about some +1 chain for better AC for the lessor tanks...<br /><br />I can even see some cool wands or consumables coming in for the magic users...<br /><br /><br />

Oh yes, and Don't forget 'Thine Holy Handgrenade'!

Just dosen't seem to be all that much need for new UR's, given how weak the distribution of the ones we already have are. Even if every single group that runs got one, it'd still take a full indy worth to get a good chunk floating out there, no?

I don't know if that logic really works in this case...<br /><br />Aren't PURPS Ultra Rare...so making the same ones over and over and over - just makes them less Ultra?<br /><br />Does anyone even have a full set of PURPS?  I don't.

In classic ccg terms, ultra-rares (chase rares) usually have a distribution ranging from 1 to 5 to 1 to 15 or so. That means on average you get 1 ultra-rare for every whatever number of rares. Based on that ratio, even if you take it at the highest end, there would need to be a heck of a lot more ultra-rares.<br /><br />For example: Foil URs in magic appear at 1 in 5, Foil URs appear in the NBC game at about 1 in 9, I think URs in clout (the dragons) appear at 1 in 12.

So what do you think TD is looking at for a UR ratio???

Even if we said that every group that went in came out with a UR, that would still be 1 UR per 7 people/participants. That sounds like a pretty good starting ratio to me. Certainly I don't think you want it much more rare than that. People should at least get a chance to _see_ a UR and touch one, even if they don't claim it as their own. That's what drives the collecting bug. They don't call them 'chase' rares for nothing. Since everyone will be getting a token bag per run this time around, it also allows people the opertunity to swap and trade for it a bit more freely. A UR being worth around 7 bags of tokens sounds about right to me.

i believe silkie put together a full set of purples at indy last year. i'm not for from a set now. i have been trading people 10 or 20 or 30 different reds for purples, depending on which one of course.

I find it amazing he was able to accomplish this.  He must have camped in the Tavern all Con long.
