TOPIC: What is "Gear" and what is an "Item"

What is "Gear" and what is an "Item" 13 years 2 months ago #1

I read the giude a few times, but it is not clear to me what, exactly, a piece of "gear" is, and what an "item" is...

For example, a Torch is clearly "gear", and a Pearl of the Sirne is likely an "item" but what about wands? I have more than I need of the common wands, so I'd like to trade them in, if possible...

I seem to remember Dave saying that he might do a new Trade Item Token in the future that includes wands. Like you, I've got a bunch of common and uncommon wands I could turn in.

It would be great if someone did a spreadsheet for the tokens this year, that listed after each token what Trade Item it could be turned in for. Did anyone happen to create a list like that?

Oooh, what Mike said. I've had to sort and re-sort things as I see posts on here indicating what items belong to what categories (Nixie Vest comes to mind here...)

I could say simply that "gear" is in the Gear section of the token guide and "Items" are in the "Miscellaneous Items" section of the guide.

But I am sure the answer you are looking for you would like to be more complicated than that.

The first tokens (wooden) that were issued used the designation "Gear" on the token for items that could be used in the dungeon but really did not have any particular magical value. Things like rope, torches, rations, etc. Some magical items not fitting into a particular category like armor, weapons, rings, etc. had the written designation "Wondrous" or "Item" written on the token.

The current layout of the guide was originally dictated by those designations originally assigned by Jeff. When we moved to the newer tokens, the gear, item, and wondrous labels were dropped and I suddenly started having to deal with various new things that did not fit in the current categories, some got their own designation, others mainly were lumped into either the Gear or Misc. Item category.

So anything in those two categories (gear and item) are applied to planks.

I suppose that the trade item token a specific token could be traded for could be added to the collector's matrix, but I hesitate to do that because it would take up a column for future tokens, limiting the number of years I can list for the current collector's matrix. Jeff is working on some sort of database, it may be possible we can include it in there.

I plan on doing at least one, maybe two trade items next year that will cover wands, rings, amulets, circlets, crowns, and necklaces. Once that is issued we should have coverage for all the different tokens you would want to trade in.

I have a spreadsheet I'm working to update, which that already has that functionality in it. Hoping to have it finished before end of Feb.

Here is what was used to calculate the trade items for the condensed packs. Because it was for the condensed packs it is only the commons from this year, but I am 99% sure that it is correct as Dave helped designate the items we were unsure of at the time. Also, I have no idea what the map fragments are because people wanted those as part of the packs.

Nixie Vest is listed under clothing, though. Isn't it Mystic Silk then? I'd rather use it for Minotaur Hide.

Dave has mentioned that it is a mistake in the current guide and will be fixed in the next version.

Yep, vest to me was clothing, but Jeff intended it to be armor, so it goes toward minotaur hide.

Many thanks. Guess I'll be taking those wands out of the pile of tokens I was going to trade in.
