Darn it, April 3rd eh? Did they know I'm expecting my tax return that week or something?

Grrrrrrr

Hehe.

Actually, I have my TR earmarked for a different gaming event, but I'm still going to end up buying vast quantities of tokens :-P
They must not have much of a problem if 11 OFFICAL GenCon events were poker tournaments with a $15.00 entry fee and large prizes. CG00081-CG00091 last year. (I played in two of the 2004 GenCon tournaments)

That might not prove that GenCon is OK with gambling that isn't controlled by them though.

Honestly, even if they don't prohibit gambling with tokens, I HIGHLY doubt they would raise a stick about it because at worst, it is a gray area.

yes, there is a problem with gambling for tokens, because they have a cash value. granted, it isn't a standard value, but it is fairly accurate ($.03 per GP)

and, there was no cash prize for the tournament... the people who qualified for the final table won a trip to a casino to play out the end of the tournament, where a cash prize was given. no cash was awarded at GenCon.

actually, technically, i believe TRADING is against the law in Indy, because of their local ordinance about selling merchandise without a permit. that includes selling and barter, which is what trading is.

it's all illegal in Indy. i still do it, but it's illegal.

Tokens do not have a value. There is no place that you can redeem tokens for anything of value.
They may have a cost, but they lack a value.

If the prize for winning tournament has any value, like a trip to a casino, then it is gambling under Indiana law.

And I have NO idea what ordnance you are talking about preventing people from selling things without a permit. Have you ever gone to a Colts game? There are dozens of people selling tickets on the street right in front of the police.

GenCon has rules about selling things in the Con if you haven't purchased a booth, so you and I can't sell tokens for money without getting GenCon mad at us. (Actually I am a little confused on how the vendors get away with not charging Indiana sales tax but that is a different issue.)

You all worry too much. Who the farg cares what the applicable laws are or what gencon thinks of it in the abstract. If it's a problem, be rest assured someone will ask you to stop doing whatever it is. If no one does that, then chances are either it's not a problem or no one cares.

Not sure how you can say tokens don't have value. Everything has value. The only way you could gamble with something that didn't have value was if you weren't using money, but just chips or some other non-monetary item. Tokens have value. That's why everyone wants them. It doesn't matter if you can redeem them somewhere or not; we don't live on the gold standard anymore. You can't go to a bank and turn in cash for gold. Everything in our economy is representative. And, even though tokens do not have a clearly defined value (specific term), they do have value (general term). So, playing games of chance with them is gambling.

As far as all of the booth operators I know, as well as the Auction staff, there ain't no selling anywhere, unless you got the permit. Could be wrong, I guess.

But, you got the poker tournament wrong. There were numerous conversations on the old GenCon forums about this, and the organizers did everything by the letter of the law. No cash, but awarding prizes in the manner they did was perfectly legal.

Could I just say - that IF persons wanted to do something like token betting/gaming in the privacy of a hotel room - that is up to them...

As far as doing something in the public eye - I think we can safely say that - that should be discouraged and not seen as worth the risk...GenCon is a business - and if you are doing something for which you experience personal gain - you sort of OWE GenCon for the gain. Again - if it happens behind closed doors and is not in the public eye...

So do I see a game of chance happening in the TD world or tavern setting - NO...not unless it is a ticketed and sanctioned game of chance....which could be possible.

My opine - Tokens do have value...be it some fraction of $10 per bag/per token...

see, i loved those ideas. a great way to get into the game a bit more, a great way to give more substantial value to GP, and a cool thing for those who can afford it, as well as a goal for those who don't yet have the cash.

i think it's a great idea.

oh, and i will be gamble with my tokens in my hotel room, just like i did last year. and, yes, it was fun.

Since I came up with the plaque/greyhawkian orphans' fund, I think there should be some sort of 5% gold gratuity coming my way. The kids don't need all that much money anyway. They'd just waste it on gruel and clothes.
