TOPIC: Hole Punch for Tokens?

Hole Punch for Tokens? 13 years 7 months ago #1

Hi,

I'm hoping someone on this forum knows of a tool that can punch a hole in a chippie token. I remember that one DM in 2009 had this tool and used it to punch a hole through the paper/sticker and the plastic underneath to the metal, but the reverse side was undamaged.

I'd like to get one for myself so that I can punch my own tokens; it looks cleaner that the markers that are use sometimes (and doesn't rub off).

It's a rotary leather punch.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

It takes a lot of force to go threw the metal inside, so you might want to look for a sheet metal punch instead of the leather punch that TD uses. I doubt any DM would complain if you offered to punch your own tokens.

I have never seen one punch a hole through a token, but I have seen them remove the "plastic" label part of the token (not the resin back nor the metal core). That seems to be more than sufficient in marking the token, as long as the hole is removed and not left in place.

I haven't tried a wooden token, but I've had limited success drilling holes in the plastic ones with a metal core with a dremmel. Basically, if you get lucky, you can put a hole very close to the edge, and avoid having to drill through the metal part, and just hit the plastic. I assume a dremmel would work great on wooden tokens.

If you really want to get a perfect hole through the metal in the token, you could pick up a manual modelling hand drill. GW produces a really good one, but you can find other quality ones from other sources. They come with a range of drill bits, but you can also use the Dremel multi-pack. The hand drill is a little more effective than the Dremel, since the manual method get more torque, whereas the Dremel gets more speed.
I put holes all the time in the chippie tokens, using a drill press. The metal doesn't phase it.
