TOPIC: Black Pearl, what does it specifically negate (*spoilers*)

Re: Black Pearl, what does it specifically negate 13 years 8 months ago #13
What will be the AC of the Ioun Stone, and could you lower it's AC with the Cestus and the Net?

No information, what have been told is the following
It has 40 hit points
It will not benefit from Smoaks Magic Resistance (meaning no coin flip when hitting it with spells)
If you want to destroy it out right A "sling bullet of thunder" launced from a "+2 Sling of impact" immediately destroys any Ioun Stone it hits. (which I believe means you hit the part of the board with the Ioun Stone.)

I do know the Net only applies to man sized targets so will probably not affect the Ioun Stone, and the Cestus would probably need to hit the specific part of the sliding board, but I do not think the Stone has an AC, you just have to hit on the board for regular attacks. So yes, there are lots of questions based on this revelation and answers I hope are forth coming from Jeff soon.

If you did the lore, you can see the combat board. I seriously suspect you have to actually land on the ioun stone to hit it. Which is really going to be a pain, as it is a smaller target than most "20s". Then you have to do 40 points of damage, unless you use the hint supplied by Thermadilion (and even then you need access to a rare token and an ultra-rare token from last year). Pain, pain, pain.
Which is why I was curious about sliding spells, since they don't hit AC per se (because they don't benefit from Cestus, nor Dex modifying items and it was described as a "skill challenge") How do sliding spells work on such an object, do you just need to hit on smoaks board the AC 15 or do you have to hit the ioun stone part of the board?

Perhaps even more if Rage is ruled as a buff that is affected by the Stone.

I thought Barbarian Rage and Bard Song were natural?

What about a Druid or Wizard in Bear form from Potion of Polymorph Bear?
Those forms do not grant a bonus to hit, so would probably not be affected. It is only those things that affect your chances to hit that are impacted by the Black Pearl. Those forms only grant bonuses to damage in the form of the modified damage wheel.

Wow...

I am seriously considering canceling my DragonWard ticket. The Pearl just went from being a mediocre Rare (how many opponents will the party fight that have magic bonuses to hit?) to being a party killer. As if Smoak needed any more help.

If this was only the pluses on weapons, I would accept it with a smile. I am a big proponent of monsters using their treasure. But destroying ALL bonuses to hit that are in any way magic based? That's powerful for a UR, most useful against the party, and doesn't even make sense. If an item boosts my strength, indirectly increasing my to hit, why would the Pearl negate that. It isn't a magic bonus to hit, it is a natural function of my boosted strength.
