I wonder if it's just a case that Jeff didn't sell out of certain UR and he's offering up an opportunity for people to get them rather than him just holding on to them.

Kim

The problem is he's run this 'promotion' a couple of times and it seems he has so many of these UR stickers left over it's effectively infinite. It's a fundamental change if what he's saying is basically that unless they completely sell out (and only 2 have in 3 years) every UR is always available. I know it makes me feel less happy about holding multiple older URs.

All in all, I think it's a bad policy unless short term funding is desperate. It's beyond robbing peter to pay paul. It robs peter and then punches him in the face. To do that, you should be at a point where you really needs the funds, and NOW. If TD is at that point, it sort of makes me worry too. I might not like it but survival of the company and the event comes first so if this is the only means to boost token sales and revenue left, so be it. IF it's not that desperate, then I think it's an all around poor decision. Player relations, financially, etc.

Even if you did need the money desperately, I would have incentivized this differently. If you have to sell out vet buyers, you should at least monetize the older tokens to your advantage. Tell newbies that if they purchase 1k, 1 of their URs can be from an earlier set. Or maybe even 2k. Set the bar higher so you can hopefully move people into larger purchases for old OOP 'chase' URs. Shafting people for $250 a pop seems small and petty. If you're going to do it, go for the gusto.
Mwahaha, I wonder if Jeff has considered cross pollinating his businesses. For every $250 in Dwarven Forge merch, they get a UR of choice :)

I would consider it. :-) (buying some stuff)
Legally... its questionable. Morally... its disgusting. Personally... I *like* it.

Well, Jeff didn't say the quantities on the older tokens had a limited supply, so it sounds like there are plenty of the older ones to go around.

Jeff - if you are likely to run out of some of them, you might want to say something about that.

Henry makes some excellent points. Especially since this is already coming on the heels of the re-released HoP's, which was just a few months ago. I personally don't mind. But I can easily see how some of the big spenders and heavy traders could quickly get alienated by such a move. I'd be wary about setting precedents - at the very least, I would echo Henry's sentiment about making the "choose ANY purp" an actual perk of one of the larger token purchases.

I agree that I would tie the ability to select older ultra rares to larger purchases.

Kim

Jeff

If every other UR is onyx, and we can order nearly every UR since 2007, does that mean we can choose URs from older years to get as onyx tokens? If not, you should clarify that only 2010 URs can be onyx.

Thanks
Mike

I have to disagree. There are plenty of incentives for the big ticket buyers. If Jeff has older URs around, wht not let people choose them for the PYP program? Seems harmless enough to me. Now I'll have to choose between the Staff of the Mage and Questor's Charm.
For me the only thing is the expectations of the customers...

An annual set is just that - something that is around for a year - then gone.

UR, Rare and other rarities are just that...tokens that are stepped in difficulty to obtain.

If URs start to jump years and remain around...the collectibility just takes a smack in the face IMO.

It is one thing for items to repeat in sets per year...quite another for them to remain obtainable from TD.

Put URs up in the auction at the end of the annual event...or sell them on eBay for charity. Something better than keeping them in the "active" group.

JM2c

Those are a couple of good ideas.

Kim

Thanks for all the good input. I have been away for the last 4 days.

---

Regarding the "all 2007-2009 URs being available" thing...

This was in response to all the negative comments about set powers. Some people demanded that they be allowed to complete UR sets by being able to get previously produced URs -- since the complete set was not announced a head of time. I thought just making it all URs would make it simple, but I can see now that it opens a can a of worms.

So...I will just take that part out...and make a post in the Forums saying that you can also choose any previously made UR from the Mitral set.

Cool?

Thanks!

That's too bad. Our group was all excited for the chance to be able to get some of those past tokens we wished we could afford but couldn't at the time.

Is it too late for me to become a token collector? Seems to me that unless I've been dropping 8K every year from the start, I don't deserve the opportunity to complete a set.

There's no real huge reason to complete a set. The set bonuses are interesting, but they're powered specifically so that they're not game breakers and usually only useful under very specific circumstances. About the only set bonus that will really have an all around bonus is the might set and that will come with a significant enough poison pill that probably evens out. Even with all the URs I have, I think I only have 1 set of anything right now, and that was mostly accidental.
