TOPIC: TrueCyberpunk?

TrueCyberpunk? 19 years 4 months ago #1

I saw TrueDugeon and TrueHeroes(which didn't look like it did too well) at GenCon SoCal 2004 this year. What if there were a TrueCyberpunk which would be a futuristic adventure. Computers, hacking, fighting as in TrueDungeon, Cyber enhancements, Neuro-pills, well lit city streets, penthouses, nightclubs. Might be something for True Adventures to consider.

Cheers,
LJR

Personally, Cyberpunk/Shadowrun is one of my favorite Genres to play in... :)

There are a lot of Genres out there that could provide for some very cool settings.

I'd like to hear other people's thoughts on favorite genres/settings...

Two of my favorite genres are the Deadlands-style Weird West, and the Firefly-style Space Western. And then there's the James-Bondish Wild Wild West. OK, I guess I'm going with Western here. Anything Western with a twist is good.

That genre was off my radar until you brought it up... Thanks.

I'd definitely be up for a cyberpunk-style True Event. Not sure about western (as the genre has never particularly appealed to me) but if it was FireFly-esque, I could cope.

Actually, that brings to mind a True/LARP idea a friend of mine had, about how to run a good SciFi LARP in a place with size constraints: Stage the event on a spaceship which is built for economy of space. All the rooms would be quite small (enough for the players to move around eachother, but not much more) and the event progresses as you move from room to room of the spaceship (bridge, galley, engine room, crew quarters, etc).

While I like the idea of a Shadowrun (Cyberpunk) version. I have to disagree with the assessment that TH did not do well.

As a behind the scenes veteran, I know how much work went into TH and how challenging the props were for the crew to run. It is technically challenging and Steve and his crew did a great job.

I have never actually had the opportunity to play either TD or TH (always staff or volunteer) so when I got the chance to sit in with some paying gamers on Saturday I jumped at the chance. My gaming buddies and I went through the event and had a blast.

It gets back to the suspension of reality and the ability to forget about the outside world for a while and both events seem to have that quality. I was really impressed with the experience and hope TH will continue to have support from UpperDeck. If not however, I am sure that a Shadowrun/Cyber Punk type of event would be something that Steve’s crew would be the perfect group to run. (Now if only someone from Social Games or Wizkids were on the boards...)

I thought TH was awesome. Short, but awesome. The combat was difficult enough to be challenging without being impossible, the puzzles and such were fun to fiddle with, and the set ups and props were extremely well done.

However, I did hear a nasty little rumor that Upperdeck will no longer be sponsoring the TH event... any truth to this?

I'm sure there is quite a bit of speculation going on, but alas I am not in the know.

I can only hope they continue to do so, it has a lot of potential....

It has been pretty standard practice to work out future Upper Deck participation after the conclusion of the con. It was that way in Indy and it will be the same way this time after SoCal. Jeff will be contact with Upper Deck in the next week or so to work out the future details.

That being said, if you like the TD/TH concept feel free to contact Gencon, Wizards of the Coast and UDE to thank them for their support and to tell them you liked the events. The more positive comments they hear from the gamers the more likely they will be to continue to support these events and others.

For my two cents I played TH for the first time in SoCal. I had been looking forward to it in Indy, but could never find the time. I thought I was going to miss out again when I ran into some friends in one of the last couple of groups that needed another player. I had a great time and I thought the concept was very cool. A few things could be improved, but just like TD, TH's listens to what the players say and try to improve each time.
