TOPIC: SoCal Dungeon is WONDERFUL

SoCal Dungeon is WONDERFUL 19 years 4 months ago #1

I just wanted to post and say what a great time I had at the Trude Dungeon SoCal... it was a truely unique experience that lived up to all my expectations, this was my first true dungeon I have ever been in and I can't wait for next year... I wish that I didn't have to wait a whole year! I wish I was able to go to the riddle reveal today but I had to work I don't think my party managed any of the riddles correctly... oh well I guess it will remain a mystery forever.

Thanks for a great dungeon adventure,
Orion1313

Hi Orion1313,

Glad you had a great time. We certainly had a great time running the event. This was the fourth True Dungeon event we have run and we all felt like this was the most fun one yet.

We will be detailing the rooms and puzzles on the forums shortly so you will be able to find out the things you have missed.

All secrets will be revealed in due time...

I am at the airport right now getting ready to fly home from SoCal. Give me a couple of days to get caught back up in the real world and I will post an online version of the riddle reveal - unless Jeff beats me to it

* Two So-Cal GenCon (1-Day) badges: $40

* Two True Dungeon game reservations: $39

* Two bags of True Dungeon Treasure Tokens: $18

* Watching your non-gamer wife screech with excitement when she detects evil for the first time: Priceless.

I cannot describe how much fun we had. We had a blast. We came down to the convention for one day, Thursday, and it was only to experience True Dungeon. We bought the badges, the games and the Treasure Tokens, and what did we get? Two hours of adventure, two new friends (from our adventuring party), and countless hours of conversation afterwards about how much fun we had.

I enjoyed it so much that I drove back down on Sunday and bought another one day pass just to go the Riddle Reveal.

I have to admit that we both went in with low expectations. Why? Because you don't want to set yourself up for disappointment. I mean come on - solving riddles and fighting lizardmen in a dimly lit dungeon littered with hidden treasure and magical items!!! That's my dictionary definition of cool!

"I just hope they do it well," I thought to myself while we were driving down to the convention center. "I just hope it isn't cheesy. I don't want Sarah to think I was a big jerk dragging her down here to play this thing. I want her to have fun."

Well, we were not disappointed, and to the contrary, everyone we tell our story to is envious of the great time we had. Our entire party survived thanks to strong teamwork and a willingness to share our resources for the good of the entire party. Every one of our party members got a chance to shine.

"Who thought my shuffle-board skills would come in handy slicing up giant spiders?" she asked as we drove home. "I wonder if we should have cast a detect magic on those books. Remember there was that one that didn't have the title? And I wonder what was in the room we didn't go into, where the wall was sliding shut...?"

Awesome. Thank you. It's great to read that players enjoyed our event...

Remember there was that one that didn't have the title? And I wonder what was in the room we didn't go into, where the wall was sliding shut...?"

If detect magic was used on the books a hint would have shown up:

"Alphabetization: As easy as One Three Two"

The room behind the sliding wall was the "sarcophagus room" or Crypt. It had a tunnel and a sarcophagus with a skeleton in it.

(note: Fog was used in Indy, a water squirt was used in So Cal - this was a development picture from while I was building it - yes, it is wearing my 2003 GenCon badge)

I have a video of it in operation - PM me if you are interested, I'll send you the link.

hehe, our wizard got acid in his face, he was really shocked by it. I was busy examining the tunnel at the time. In all honesty, it probably saved me from being taken by the spider because I backed out when I heard his cry. Then I turned around and saw the spider guy's fingers through the trap door.

I had just turned and was standing at the head of the sarcophagus, looking at my party, when the acid trap went off. It splattered the cleric (my nephew), who was standing a foot or two in front of me and to the left. I barely, barely missed getting a faceful of "acid" (I felt the moisture on the tip of my nose, fro crying out loud).

My nephew let out a shocked yell ("AAGH!")and didn't even CONSIDER pretending it had missed him. Everyone knew he took the majority of it.

That was awesome!

That water trap is one of my favorite things - lots of good reactions when that thing goes off. We used that inside a chest in the first module and I had one group where the rogue wanted to open the chest so badly and the rest of his party kept trying to talk him out of it. Finally they all gave up and moved to the far side of the room so the rogue could satisfy his curiousity. I guess I pressed on the pump to hard because the water shot right over the rogues head and ended up hitting the rest of the people who were trying to hide. It was awesome! I don't think they ever let that rogue touch anything else for the rest of the adventure :P

Matthew- glad you had good time. We could tell at the riddle reveal how much fun you had. Players like yourself are the reason we are happy to put some much time and effort into the event. I hate to say this because I don't want you to be bummed, but you could have attended the riddle reveal without a badge. Basically you only need a badge to play in a ticketed event or to enter the exhibit hall.

We appreciate the good comments and we look forward to seeing you all next time.

I was happy to pay the $20 for the True Dungeon Riddle Reveal. My curiosity would never have forgiven my wallet if I had tried to wait for the Riddle Reveal post on the web. I was too excited.

Afterward, I wandered over to the convention hall and bought some really cool artwork, so it all worked out great.

I am bummed that I missed the crypt room. It sounds fantastic, and the videos were great!

Although, I'm sure that if our party had gone that way I would have ended up with a face full of water, and probably would have been the one to investigate the Phase Spider's tunnel, too, which means I would have then missed the bridge room....

See - it all works out for the best.

I didn't make the Riddle Reveal (as I mentioned in another post). I'm assuming ALL the secrets/riddles/puzzles are revealed at these?

Also, is the Master Maze Dwarven Forge drawing done at the Riddle Reveal, or after all you TD guys get home and unpacked and such? I haven't heard anything about a winner, and I was just curious.

We have started announcing the winner via the internet now. Once we determine the winner and contact him or her, we will make the announcement online.

Pretty much all of the answers are given at the Riddle Reveal (what we can remember) and we also do a little Q&A session. I will be sitting in the airport tomorrow afternoon so I will try and work on the online version then.
