TOPIC: True Grind difficulty level?

True Grind difficulty level? 1 year 6 months ago #1

What difficulty level is True Grind?
Specifically, where does a mid-Nightmare-level build fall on the scale of
- Chance of surviving if you're smart and the team works together
to
- You're a Game of Thrones fan favorite character wearing a red shirt

Historically, Grind has been available to play at the same difficulties as standard dungeons. I don't know if that will be the same this year, but that's how it worked in the past.

That said, Grind is generally more difficult than a standard adventure. Bring lots of healing consumables!

Just in general, grind often ended in death. As did true raid, which was along the same lines. If dying in ridiculous ways to a possessed gazebo or having your legendary taken away because you happened to attack its namesake with it, or being killed by your own party because they thought you got possessed (these are all things that happened in raid/grind in the past) then grind is probably not for you. (This is not directed at you, just in general) In my mind grind was more about seeing how long you could survive before everyone bit it, and just having fun with crazy strategies and tokens you didn't get to use elsewhere.

You choose your difficulty. But in the past I've always thought about it as being 1 tier harder than usual. So if you choose Hardcore it would feel like Nightmare, etc.

Prioritize Saves! And bring lots of consumables (resurrection potions)!
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

I’ve only played Grind twice, but I will say that HC felt like NM. You fight the monsters until you die or the time runs out. It is a great chance to deploy some lesser-used tokens and engage in creative thinking.

I remember we were one of the first (maybe the first?) group to defeat Grind when it premiered at True Realm. It was neat that they actually kept a written list outside of the entrance of the groups that succeeded. We played it every year for a few years and really enjoyed it, Stu was amazing as the DM!

Agreed w prior posts to expect grind to be 1 level higher in difficulty than a regular dungeon.

Expect goofiness as well as benefiting from using obscure tokens for unusual conditions. Ignoring seasickness or penalties from swarms, etc are the types of things that tens to come up.

With a new DM for Grind I suspect that what occurred in the past may be up for change. Not sure though.

Expect combat after combat and attacks that are areas of effect and various saving throws.

It is all about defeating one encounter in as few as a number of rounds as possible and moving to the next.

Healing potions will be hard to come by since Alchemist Ink were in short supply and number were converted to Alchemist Ink. The blue token healing potions are easier to come by and cheaper also.

My plan is to do what always been done in terms of difficulty since that's what made grind popular in the first place. The monster stats will be inline with the higher end of the selected difficulty (Normal - Epic). Though said monsters may also use more tactics in their combats, especially on the higher difficulties. Honestly I'm just a care taker who is going to try his hardest to not mess up what people enjoy.

I always liked how the encounters tied to each other or had stories behind them. The modron who was just asking for directions but looked dangerous and threatening and spoke an unintelligible language was a good example. The room with the demon, the devil, and the angel - each saying you should side with them with different results depending on your choices was another great one.

If I am able to get grind tickets, I will definitely make them available on the forums right away (to be fair, I'd set aside a couple for friends.)

I have every confidence that you’re going to put on a great show. Knock ‘em dead!

And don’t let them revive! :D
