TOPIC: Importance of gear tokens?

Importance of gear tokens? 13 years 2 weeks ago #1

It seems that every year, there are a number of "gear" tokens included in the token set. I'm talking about items like silk rope, belt pouches etc.

1) How often have gear tokens come into play during past years?

2) What are some examples of how they have come into play during past years?

3) Do gear tokens come into play any time other than their year of release? (Example: Silk rope was 2012. Any chance it's needed for a puzzle this year?)

Gear can be very important sometimes. There was one year where the easiest way to do something was with a rope. There were other way but if you did not have a rope token you did not get to use the rope that was in the room behind the DM.

As far as I know there is always a way to figure out a puzzle without gear but some puzzles can be easier with the right gear. So far I do not know of a puzzle that used gear from another years tokens.

  1. Frequently, if not every year.
  2. Rope or twine was needed to get a key. In 2011 the spyglass could be used to get a major clue in a puzzle room.
  3. Not positive, but I think so. I think the medusa was in a year the mirror was not printed, but I'm not positive. But even if not, there are always ways a creative player can use gear.

Last year, rope and belt pouch to ferry the plaques across the chasm. I'm not sure how you were supposed to do that one without a rope because we were told that they couldn't be tossed without shattering them... but sometimes I hear things that weren't really said.

So this year I know there are:
Wetstone
Polymeric Decoy
Small Silver Mirror
Mortar and Pestle (2007)

Others from the past I've seen that sound to be of interest-
Bone Scroll Case (2007)(2008)(2011)
100' Silk Rope (2012)
Belt Pouch (2012)
Torch (2011)
Spyglass (2009)(2011)
Bottle of Rum (2011)
Tankard (2010)
Pewter Mug (2012)

Any I missed for 2013? And I guess what is the chance the party fills them in with draws (assuming you get all newbs.)

Importance of gold? 13 years 2 weeks ago #7

Since I'm asking questions again, another follow up...what is the importance of gold?

I notice it seems to have about a $1 = 50 GP exchange rate in many places. Is this right? (Ebay gives lots of opportunities for $1 for 15-20 GP.)

Is this the method used for trading on the show floor? (Since $ should not be used with anyone but a licensed vendor.) If so, does a lot of GP trading take place?

Gold is worth about 0.025 to 0.030 per gold piece. That puts a 1000 gp bar at about $25 to $30. Gold ends up being very important when transmuting tokens.

from the TDb entery for every GP-equivalent token:
Gold Piece or GP equivalent tokens may be hoarded as treasure, traded with other adventurers (big-time token collectors may be especially interested in GP), exchanged for NPC services outside of the adventure, used as currency to bid on items in the True Dungeon auction, or exchanged for transmuted tokens on http://www.truedungeon.com/transmuted . On very rare occasions, certain NPCs within the adventure may be influenced by the offering of riches.

True, but there weren't any bribable creatures last year either. That doesn't mean they won't happen again in the future.
