Recently got the scoop on real thunderstones, which I found interesting - so I'm sharing with you.

The are bullet shaped, 4 inch or longer, and were believed to be thrown at the earth (as lightning) by a god/gods, turning to stone when they hit the ground. They were thought to cure diseases, and if kept under your eaves, would keep your house from being hit by lightning.

What they actually are are belemnites, the fossil remains of a squid like creature that died out more than 60 million years ago and, unlike modern squid, had a skeleton. This structure was on their tail (more or less) and served as a protective cover. The rest of the body was soft and rarely preserved, but here's a complete one:
