TOPIC: True Grind questions.

True Grind questions. 5 years 10 months ago #1

5 questions --

1. Does True Grind grant treasure like normal runs? Treasure Enhancers work, right?

2. I've heard that True Grind throws a lot of surprises at you. I've read about gear being being used in True Grind, as well as obscure tokens really taking the spotlight - ex. Ring of Direction. Question is - Is True Grind enjoyable even if you only have the opportunity to run it once? It seems like the kind of run where you'd go through multiple times to try and adapt to the challenges.

3. I'm eyeing a True Grind that currently still has 8 tickets available. What is the minimum threshold of players that need to attend in order for it to fire? Is there a minimum # of players recommended in order to be successful? I imagine that running Grind short-handed puts you at a large disadvantage.

4. As far as difficulty level - the (up to) ten participants agree on a challenge rating to run at, right?

5. How close together can you get away with scheduling events? If Ihave a 2 hour adventure booked for 6:01, would it be possible to make an 8:00 Grind right afterward? 8:01? 8:02?

Thanks, everyone. I'm contemplating signing up for True Grind for the first time and I'm trying to figure out what to expect.

1) No. Enchancers don't work. you only get 1 treasure chip

2) enjoyment is subjective, but yes you can play it once and have a great time. Helps if you don't mind losing.

3) The DMs will make whatever assortment of players turn up, work. Don't worry.

4) yes

5) Yes but turn up as fast as you can and would be helpful if you have a printed character.

1. No treasure. Just completion token. Switch out treasure enhancers.

2. Very enjoyable if you like intense combat situations where you can include creativity if you want.

3. Not necessarily. You probably should have a minimum of 6 specific classes though.

4. Yes. Normal, Hardcore and Nightmare. Each is a step up from normal runs.

5.Yes you can. Hussle and show up within first 6 to 12 minutes or so to do party sheet. You can also provide a printed copy to another person on the run to show before showing up. Then the coach would just need to confirm tokens.

A special note about #4
Be honest and open with the DM/coaches.
If you hate losing aka dieing, grind might not be the best choice. That said, just tell your coaches and they can help choose a challenge rating that is right for your party.

The challenges of grind are typically 1 level higher/harder then normal TD runs.
That means hardcore grind is = nightmare TD.
Grind goes to Epic.

A side note about #3
Due to a snafu one of my runs was shy a lot of people so we "ghosted" the extra wrist bands. Eric let us play additional characters. It was a blast.
There is no guarantee this will happen for your group so don't expect this but it shows the DMs really try and make your experience fun.

You already got some great answers from people who know what they are talking about, but since I hope you will try out Grind, and since I'm one of the DMs and can give something close to official answers, I will reply as well.

1) You get only one treasure draw and a completion token (which is usually unique to Grind). You can equip treasure-enhancers but they have no effect.

2) My favorite Grind run may still be my first one when I didn't have any idea what to expect. Certainly it doesn't hurt to try it once, and if you like more of a challenge and more roleplaying than you get in the regular runs then I'm sure you'll love it.

3) Normally True Grind runs sell out the quickest so I am very surprised there are still any tickets available. Perhaps it is because Jeff forgot to put "True Grind" in the title of the events. But I fully expect it to be sold out before GenCon. If not, we will run it for whoever is there no problem.

4) Yes, like the normal dungeon you all have to agree on a difficulty level, with Normal being the fallback. Note that Normal is still fairly challenging, about the same as Hardcore in the dungeon, but lots more combat too. There is no non-lethal in TrueGrind (as Eric likes to put it, the only non-lethal option is for the monsters if you so choose).

5) If you have a 6:01 dungeon run, you'll be in the epilogue area right at about 8pm sharp. If you ask nicely you may be able to grab your loot, save your treasure draws for later, and make it to the grind coaching room by 8:05PM or so. That's cutting it close for an 8pm Grind but not impossible. If you find your party on the forums beforehand (so you can figure out your class and let them know you'll be a bit late) and/or have your character pre-built (e.g. printed out or in a mobile app) then I think it will work. Ideally you'd have builds ready for a few characters in case your first choice isn't available by the time you show up.
My online token shop: www.tdtavern.com

We buy, sell, and trade True Dungeon tokens. We also have a convenient consignment program where you can sell your own tokens.

Thank you Kirk, Valetutto, & Edwin. This is all great information to have. It's great to be able to draw upon so much veteran knowledge. I'm working with a group now to see if they'll have me along.
