TOPIC: Ranged vs Melee

So as of right now i have a build that is ranged and spell based but ive been wondering if ive gone wrong with it. should i have not specialized in one form of combat and maybe diversified a bit?

There probably is no right answer but if your playing a wizard dex seems like a good choice. It improves you spell to hit on the slide based attacks, helps your armor class and reflex save.

I would agree there is no right or wrong answer, but partially because this a group game.

If you're looking for a cheap add for roundness, wands from this year might work into your build nicely. Like jedibcg said though, there is no right or wrong answer.

No wrong answer except for lightning when the entire party is in a watery filled room, don't be that player, learn from others mistakes. :silly:

If your objective is to maximize the damage output over the course of the dungeon, you'll want to be a melee based build with one of the two attacks per round classes: Ranger and Monk.

If you want a more defensible character, ranged is great because while you boost your DEX to bring up to-hit you also boost AC and Reflex saves.

"Balanced" - meaning roughly even to-hit and damage in melee and ranged both is probably the wrong way to go, as there are only so many slots, so you'll end up being below average at everything.

If you are looking to buy tokens at the UR level and keep playing a spellcaster I'd recommend picking up a Medallion of Mystic Mouth, an Ioun Stone Fluorite Cube while they are both still in print, and ~5 of the best 2018 damage wand your class can use, this will add 5-10 points of damage to your output each turn that you aren't otherwise using your free action (depending on class).

Unless you have a instrument that lets you do other things while doing Bard song, Dex is still a good option. I think the best thing to look at first are the instruments available in your price range and work from there.

I have a Bard build I keep put together as a loaner. Over the years there have been a lot of great transmutes and reds that add to Dex. I just keep adding them to the build. Bard is (in my opinion) the best class to go crazy with Dex. So currently my bard is up to 34 AC and +17 reflex save. I think of him as a midieval Axl Rose with too much cocaine in his system. Won't stop moving, is hard to hit and taunts the GM to hit him with creative song lyrics.

Since your playing bard and going for range, you can use the blowgun flute to attack and sing at same time
