TOPIC: Token holder

Token holder 6 years 3 months ago #1

I am planning on making a board of sorts for holding my tokens during a true dungeon. Basically my idea is to make magnetized holes in the board much like the sliders. I want to be able to reference my tokens which I have equipped as well as have some handy consumables st the ready if they are needed.
I want to make the layout comparable to the character creation sheet.

Does this seem like something DMs would prohibit?

It depends.

How big is this board? Is it relatively small? Probably fine.

Is it as big as a tower shield? Possibly an issue because large and/or bulky items are a nuisance in the dungeon.

I would encourage you to make something that showcases relevant tokens, not necessarily your entire outfit. E.g., if you're wearing mundane armor or anything with its stats entirely recorded on the party card, there's no need to have those tokens displayed in the dungeon. If you have tokens which you would need to show a DM in the dungeon (e.g., thieves' tools, holy symbol, specialized bard instrument, etc.), having those tokens handy to show would be quite useful.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections in this thread .

You may want to look into token sashes, either buying one, or making your own. I think it would do what you're looking for, while being less cumbersome, are hard to forget, and are allowed in the dungeon.

They are also a well known TD accessory. I don't own one, but I've seen many of the veterans wear them.

I LOVE the Token Sashes and highly recommend them.

When you click that link, there's a picture of me with my sash!

Thanks for the responses. The tablet is going to be not much bigger than a piece of paper, approximately 5/8ths thick. I have made a custom cutter at work which will bore a hole 41mm in diameter with a cone at the bottom and have a 3/8" hole in the center for a magnet, should function just like the sliders used for combat.

I'm going into work tonight for overtime and am gonna try the cutter on a piece of walnut I picked up. I need to maken inserts pit of high speed steel for it but have made them out of mild steel for now. Waiting for my order of HSS to arrive so I can make proper inserts.

As for the sash I am not too keen on them, just personal preference. I've got a thing for woodworking so a wooden tablet scratches me just right. I want to clearcoat it and make it look all nice.

The wooden board could be used as a display for token with a wall hanger or kickstand on the back of it.

I'll post a picture of the result when I can.

Edit: Here is what the cutter looks like and a test cut in some misc. wood.

Cool. looking forward to the pics. You may find it useful add hoops to the back so you can add a clip on a shoulder strap for when your going through the dungeon and at times can't hold it.

The cutter worked great on the walnut, so happy with the results. The strap is a good idea but it is very light, especially since it has all of the holes in it. I carry a messenger bag at conventions anyways so I will just carry it in there when not needed.

I'm gonna chamber the corners, varathane it, etc. I ordered neodymium magnets so They will be good and strong.

A board like this would even make a good display for hard earned coins if it had a kickstand on the back or something.

Very cool, i always look and admire those far more crafty than i am.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven
