Stacey, no need to worry at all about not being familiar with True Dungeon. There are tons of new players every year. There is a coaching room and a training room where they bring you up to speed on how to play before you go into your first room, so you'll be very ready. Plus, there are resources on the True Dungeon page that can help bring you up to speed, and you could also (but don't need to) get some tokens ahead of True Dungeon to help prepare you.

You'll be OK even if you do no preparation before GENCON and only play with the 10 pack of tokens you get for the run. You might want to make sure you play at Normal level with just your starting 10 pack of tokens though, on your first time through.

Welcome!

You might also consider coming to True Dungeon Celebration in April. It will be much more relaxed than GenCon and plenty of Friday tickets are still available.

Welcome! I think by and large you'll find experienced players to be friendly, and there are lots of other new players.

You're already ahead of the game by being in these forums - as you'll likely be able to coordinate with other folks to get into a run with some people who are friendly.

As others have said, no preparation is required, but can be done if that's what you want to do. Also if you want to send me your email address (to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) I'll let you know if I end up doing another newbie run this year (where I buy a whole run of 10 and bring 9 newbies with me).
My online token shop: www.tdtavern.com

We buy, sell, and trade True Dungeon tokens. We also have a convenient consignment program where you can sell your own tokens.

does it matter the time slots? i heard that it takes awhile to do this. What are the good times to go?

Plan for 2.5-3 hours (5-10 minutes check-in, 15-30 minutes meeting team and prepping in coaching room before coach arrives at the ticketed time, 2 hours for the formal event part). Also, unless you have other events in the stadium, add another 5-10 minutes to get over there from the main convention center area.

As for 'good' times, it is always a near sell out. A good time is whatever time you can get.

Early Thursday some of the battle rooms may be too hard/too easy and will get rebalanced by later in the con.
Late in the con there is a small possibility some of the puzzle room props start to have some glitches popping up.
Individual NPCs, DMs, and coaches are likely to have better voices near the start of their shifts any day, but I'm not sure exactly how long each shift is.

i would assume that when the event registration comes online in may, this would be apart of that. or would it be separate? I was thinking that as a new person the puzzle event would seem easier to do. Is there a forum spot for groups to get together. Meet new players and such? I would be interested in meeting new people before the event and trying to set up a time as a group.

Yes, it's part of the standard event registration nowadays so you can put some sessions in your wishlist. One nice thing is GenCon won't let you double book yourself, so say you want to go on TD sometime Thursday evening - you could put like 7:00, 7:12, 7:24, 7:36, 7:48 all in your wishlist, and if you got any of them the rest will be skipped, since they all overlap.

In terms of when to go during the weekend, I like to go earlier, because occasionally props and sets break down. There is some merit to the fact that things can get rebalanced for difficulty. Sometime on Friday during the day may be the sweet spot between those concerns.

One unique thing about TD is you are allowed to buy up to 10 tickets (a whole run worth) in one timeslot. For all other events you can only buy 2 tickets, one for yourself and one for a friend (unless you have linked your accounts together so you can buy on behalf of other people).

There will be a ton of posts in the forums from people trying to arrange things just after this - people looking for the rest of their timeslot, people looking for adventurers to join their runs, people looking for opens slots to join, etc..

There is usually some similar activity before registration, which is I think what you are after. Team meet up and start planning in the forums, and sometimes people put out a call.

Alternatively if you have a big group who is going to the con together with you, you can twist their arms to go with you ;0.

When registering do you pay right away? I'm glad I could select multiple times.

If you buy from GenCon directly, yes.

Many people buy all ten tickets for a run, then resell the other nine to friends or others on the forum, ALWAYS at face value, (Ten people trying to buy individual tickets to the same run will meet with limited success.) Some will sell them for less, in exchange for some or all of the treasure chips from the run.

If you get your tickets second-hand, so to speak, the answer is usually still yes.

Ok, thank you. At least now I know I have to have to pay right away. I'm not really looking to buy a bunch of tickets though. Im willing to just take a whirl at it. I was thinking about doing all 4 days, I heard they were different each day. Might purchase token packs just for fun.
