Our group Bard enjoys the class but has anxiety that makes performing uncomfortable for her. The somewhat continual demand that she sing is pushing her to swap classes (which she doesn't want to do) or stop playing (which would be a loss)

If it doesn't change I can't see it not leading to her quitting True Dungeon and that would be rather upsetting for our rotating group.

I've heard they can't do this but I've also heard it's pretty common to have DMs requiring it. What's the official view?

Then don't play bard. You can sing. Hum. Tell a story. Play a whistle. Play music from your phone...it isn't hard to be creative

I agree with ME, I've seen the roleplaying element of TD slowly diminish over the many years I've participated. The Bard having to sing is one of the few remaining aspects of that past and I'd hate to see it removed from TD. If your friend doesn't like to sing, they shouldn't play a Bard just like someone who doesn't like to slide two tokens at the same time shouldn't play a Ranger.

You can play a ranged Ranger. You can do other things than sing. No one is telling you how to play your character classes we shouldn't be telling anyone else how to play either.

well they tell me that as rogue and barbarian i can't cast spells.

Shout out to Linda, Stu, and Jeff (not Martin) for the support and encouragement. I don't think I've ever had as much fun at a con as I had this past weekend! I think the best part was watching every party try and solve the puzzle. Some of the looks on their faces were priceless once they figured it out!

Volunteering is something I definitely plan on doing again and it was really neat to meet a bunch of the forumites as well. :)

Yay! Glad you enjoyed your time volunteering! Definitely hope to see you back. =]

I know I plan on volunteering again next year. Now that I know a bit of what to expect, I'm hoping I can make my room a bit more interesting.

Thanks for the question about BardSong.
As someone else posted, it is not required, but recommended to have the Bard perform. When I was a DM, I would sometimes ask the Bard to just let me hear something... singing, humming, reciting poetry, whatever... just so I remembered to add the bonus (notes on the board sometimes get erased). But being somewhat shy myself, I know how hard it can be for some to do.

I'll speak with the Directors and other ACs to make sure we have a clear and consistent ruling on this for future True Dungeons.

Thank you.

Given the accommodations that are made for those with physical issues I hope similar accommodations can be made for those with mental ones. I know not everyone who doesn't want to sing has a specific reason but there are several medical conditions that someone can suffer from without outward signs that can make doing so uncomfortable.

How about humming, interpretive dance, or just a small sign that says "I am singing"?

Read a poem
read a stirring speech
hum
dance
mime
do sign langage
whistle
use a kazoo or slide whislte

I loved the idea of the phone and speaker, as long as it wasn't so loud it interfered with the room.

Call your AC if there is a problem.

You can't expect someone with social anxiety to call for an AC. If they didn't want to literally perform what makes you think they are going to want to draw attention to themselves by asking for an AC?

Barbarians aren't required to actually rage. Clerics are not required to recite actual blessings. Dwarf fighters do not have to yell taunts. Paladins do not have to physically stand next to and protect their guard target. Bards should not have to perform. They should be able to say they are using their power and be done with it.

It's not about everyone else's experience hearing the bard perform. It should be about that player's experience playing the bard class however they prefer and are comfortable with.

DM's say they need the reminder for the effect. If I'm raging, it's on me to remind the DM. Same with bardsong. The only obligation the bard should have should be to remind the DM that he or she is still performing.

We need an official, in the Coach and Player guides, ruling.

Thanks  As long as work doesn't get in the way, I'm sure I'll be full-time volunteering next year at GHC.

I had a DM tell me they flat out refused to apply the bonus if I wasn't signing on one run and let it slide. Told my next group and I quaked ducks which distracted our DM a lot.

The official ruling per Jeff and the players guide it that it is encouraged but not required. I remind my DM between rounds. At the start of the room I show them widseths so they know I will be singing and attacking. I also should not have a DM say they are doing this because they know me. If I'm reminding you what my bonus is before you're adding it and while you're doing so that should be much more than enough. Knowing this happened to other bards as well and not me saddens me. One class should not be singled out to do more than any other. If we decide to then fine but it should never be required no matter how you think we should perform. And while it isn't required it shouldn't be a discussion of you can do this or this, if the rule changes then fine (that was also a threat I had made by a DM saying they would get the rule changed) if it does change I'll perform. I'll quack my ducks and be happy because I always pick up a duck in the dungeon. And when asked I do sing. I even sang on most of my runs and had a blast singing with Raven but if I feel uncomfortable singing in front of some people I shouldn't be forced to when I've tols the DM I am singing and told them what my bonus is.

And if it is altered by another class and boosted I remind the DM of that as well which is not something I should do but I keep track of in case they dont.

I had some fantastic runs but I also had some awful combats.

The puzzles are always my favorite and I loved solving the dinner table as a group and us all screaming with joy. Our last run was so much fun and ending it with every DM we could and random people was a blast we even chanted on of us to have Warren join us!

I play bard or wizard and usually have a druid with me! :)

I'm so glad True Dungeon came to GHC! Totally worth all the hype, imo.

As a player(bard), I loved being able to sing and dance and interact with the monsters(the mimic was a total scream). The ambiance was great, the DMs were interesting, the NPCs on point. From the my group's perspective, some were upset that we had a pair of Veterans in our run that killed stuff too fast, but that's a consequence of a pick up group. And to be fair, my group can whine... a lot. They had a good time over all.

As a Volunteer: WOW. Thank you to the True Dungeon Volunteer family for making me feel so welcome so quickly. Wish I could have done more than one shift; maybe I can swing more at GenCon(if I can make it). Shout out to Jon for helping a makeup-inept person like me look like a really rad drow; Mike and Simon for making me feel like I belonged (and wasn't always lost); the GM in my room (UA Saturday room 7) for giving nearly every group that came through as positive experience and Jessica the makeup sorcerer for showing how to use all those scary brushes.

Constructive criticisms: It stinks that Underdark Awaits had to axe the NPC that introduced the story line at the end of the training room; by the time people got to room 7 it was a complete surprise that they were being trialed for assassins. Lots of confusion there (and I see it was mentioned earlier in this thread).
I saw a lot of neat things during my runs and I appreciate all of the people who thanked the volunteers for their time. Some of those neat things were also kind of challenging, like the bard who kept squeaking their duck during the monologue. It was so hard to concentrate! That being said, a squeaky duck is a great tool to remind the DM that you're performing. BRILLIANT.
