Again, though, it goes to the current site design. You can do a hosted site with controls for that kind of activity and short of someone doing a DDS attack from tens of thousands of devices simultaneously, you'd be fine. I'll send Jeff some referrals of good companies that do this type of work that I've hired before. It's not cheap but the costs of being hacked are far worse (if you could be brought down by a single user, it's unlikely any PII is completely safe).

I think you may be dramatically overestimating the technical sophistication needed to temporarily brown out the TD forums.

A single user can trigger this behavior by opening new tabs at a reasonable human-clicking speed.

While i would consider it a brilliant tactic to counter snipers (considering the auction had no real structure/rules to prevent dirty tactics), i suspect this was a case of many users constantly refreshing the forums and openning the thread to see new bids. Though, every one of those 'i was trying to post this bid at the last minute' posts made me laugh like nelson.

I have posted the final prices according to competitive bids that came in right at 9PM and noncompetitive ones that came in shortly after the crash was over.

Unfortunately I don't see a better way to handle extending the auction as the site could intentionally or unintentionally crash again resulting in the same problem all over again.

By this time tomorrow all winners should receive a PM with payment and Gencon pickup info.

Any remaining tokens will be moved over to a sale thread this week.

I've sent a few PM's to folks who's bids were pushed out prior to the auction closing with offers to sell the tokens [out of my store] they were bidding on at their last bid price.

If you were looking for those specific tokens .. consider this a 'second chance' Everyone wins. You get a token at the price you were willing to spend. I sell a token I'm not interested in keeping. Shady gets all the money he would have anyways.

The forums have been around since at least June of 2004, 3 years before Netflix started streaming movies, 2 years before Amazon started selling Amazon Web Services / cloud hosting, and within a few months of the launch of Facebook.

Overall this site works great. Simple is better. I do not mind rolling 2005.

I forgot to ask what year the +2 Ring of Protection was from? It doesn't really matter as I needed either one. It was more out of curiosity. It would be nice to have the matching one to my +4 ring though. Thanks again for your awesome forum auction. I'm sure everyone is happy. Sorry you had to sell off your collection.
