TOPIC: Volunteer Question

Re: Volunteer Question 16 years 6 months ago #37

I will leave that up to individuals to negotiate with Jeff for a special deal...

Because we have three we have historical precedence for having the 4 hour shifts, I will try and address in an upcoming podcast. I will make a note to cover in the one about DMing with Stuart (hopefully).

You don't need no stinking badges?

Apparently GenCon thinks we do.

But we don't need no volunteer badges, especially if that keeps a volunteer who cant afford his badge from being able to help.

I want to point out that this year I came to the build and helped for about 4 hours completely Gratis. I just did it to hang out and see people. I think that the best idea I have heard so far is to make compensation in some other form. Those of us (myself included) who would not need a badge but would still volunteer for part time and could get compensated otherwise (tokens or whatever) would be awesome. In fact if you ask me this is a great way to save money if you are donating them things that are coming at cost to TD. It seems folks are being reluctant about this idea when it is fairly obvious that there are people interested in helping. I would like to see Jeff's take on the alternate rewards idea cause there are some things that are cheap enough but make awesome rewards that are not a GenCon badge. Hopefully this will be taken into consideration cause I love the idea.

Another form of compensation is being able to go see the CON for more than one-two hours at a time... DOH!

I wouldn't need to be reimbursed for my badge either. I didn't realize that it was costing TD full time people. I volunteer because of the cool people that I get to work with. Put me in with the "badge-less" volunteers.

Kim

Right and if we have half a dozen or so "badgeless" volunteers, then we could replace them (us) with half a dozen full timers. These new full timers could make sure there for other full timers to get longer breaks.

Sounds like the beginning of a plan.

Myself, I'd be happy to help "full time", and take nothing... I live here in Indy( within 5 minutes of downtown), so many of the "benefits" are lost on me. I help because it's more fun than the "rest of the con" for me. Not that I expect that to apply to others, but hey that's where I'm coming from.

Not that it means I'm giving back Jeff's gift this year... I appreciate, that he appreciated my help..;)

Another question that comes to mind...How many Volunteers can we get with badges During the con? by then, they have likely already paid for a badge, it will help us get volunteer from the forums / previous adventurers, who are interested in Volunteering though.

From what I've seen, TD offers more to it's volunteers than any other place I've volunteered at.

This was my second year volunteering for the Tavern. I don't really go for the con itself although I try to go and check out the booths when I get the chance. But my main reason for going is the Tavern. I put in as many hours as I can to help put on the games and add atmosphere. This year I was there for set up and take down. It was a great time and a lot of work. I'll be there next year doing the same thing, if I can get the time off again.
