TOPIC: Any opportunity to use situational gear?

Re: Any opportunity to use situational gear? 9 years 7 months ago #13

As a normal player I'd agree about the environment gear being pretty much useless. On my 2(or 5th) run i just straight up told my party of not to bother bringing that stuff out of my token boxes because they were useless and I didn't want to have to resort again.

As a grind player, thank you Eric for making both my first and impulse 2nd grind memorable and using all those commons better than most rares.

There may not be a lot of opportunity to use the situational gear written in to the modules, but DMs are encouraged to go with the flow when players are using their tokens creatively, which is where I think those tokens shine.

Two examples from my own DM experience:
This year, in Viper room 1, a player immediately used her magnifying glass to examine the obelisks. From this, she figured out that the center obelisks spun freely. (Sure, I told them that about 10 seconds before they would have figured it out anyway, but it was a clever use of a token.)

Last year, in the first room of the werewolf adventure, a player used his Tinkerer's Gloves to try and throw hot coals from the campfire at the werewolf. I went with it, had him slide an empty slider and, when he scored a hit (anything inside the monster outline), dealt a tiny amount of damage to the wolf (2 points, I think) and informed him that the wolf was specifically not attacking him from then on, since he was correct in that werewolves fear fire.

So use those tokens! This is why I keep a small "knapsack" (token folder) of mundane gear (including two mirrors - take that medusa!) during my runs - you never know when it will be useful.

I do the exact same thing, and just ordered a small silver mirror, just in case to add to it

I keep all my misc gear tokens in one of Molda's token wallets .
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections in this thread .

I might have to look into that, I had seriously considered a leather deck box that could slip on my belt to hold tokens at Gencon.

I still carry around a wooden oar (among other things), just in case.

Can't recommend Molda enough. Had him make a wrist mounted token holder with dual buckles that I carried through 5 runs + 2 grinds. Had to special order it but the work/price was fantastic.

I can also recommend those dual-pocket ammo pouches that were being sold all over for $20 in the convention hall. I put my healing and gear tokens in that and it was great.

Unfortunately, when the medusa jumped out, we killed her before I could hand a mirror to our Barbarian. And I'm immune to petrify anyway...

Molda gave me one of his token wallets as a gift - I highly recommend his work! Beautiful, practical, sturdy.
