What would be an effective use of these?

Could they be used to escape a room? Last year, my group couldn't finish combat before time ran out, so we had to move to the next room. We took damage for doing so (attacks of opportunity, I suppose). If we used a smokestick, could we get away unscathed, or would we just disorient ourselves and the monsters?

Well traditionally they are used for gaze-attack type of encounters. Beholders or Medusas, for example.

Cheaper method is probaly just to say you've got your eyes closed or use a mirror. Either way you're going to run into the concealment penalties.

Last year I think it could have helped you find/see the invisible people/monsters if you didn't have see invisiblity, or dust of appearance. So its use can vary.

I was thinking that smokestick could be used if you are being targetted from long range... say enemies are shooting down on you from somewhere high up and you don't really want to get into ranged combat with them.

Or if your party is flat out getting it's collective butt kicked, a smoke stick may be a way to save yourselves until the end of the round.

you can get bad guys addicted to smoke sticks with it, obvisiously :D :D

jk, or am I...

anyway..you can use it to see invisable things cuz the smoke would pass around it so you can see it

:idea: Could you set-off a smokestick and quickly throw it into an empty waterskin...and throw that at a monster...thought being that the waterskin would eventually leak or explode to allow the smoke out??? Sort of a delayed smoke-bomb. ;)
