I would play the character that I think would be the most fun. You only get to play TD once a year...so have fun with whatever class seems like it would be the most fun.

(BTW, there are all new character sheets in 2008 -- so expect some changes to stats and spells in 2008.)

I noticed the comment on that issue in the "news" line at the top of the forums.

Do you have a date in mind when that information will be made public?

Even more reason to have these sort of discussion then. I was sort of concerned the cost of reprinting character cards would be a bother, but if they're being swapped anyway, it'd the best time for tweaking.

I'd again like to put forth the whole 'form of nature' ability for the druid. It'd be spiffy and archetype appropriate.

Until we get a peak at 4th edition rules, any effort would be a waste. Who knows what changes are coming...and what could slightly change with TD?

I also read that two new character classes may be in the works...

Stay tuned.

Yikes. TD is going 4th ed? They're not due to release the player's handbook until may I think. Does that mean TD will get an advanced heads up about the basic mechanics? I wouldn't think that would be enough notice otherwise. Not to mention it'll probably be a bugger to make sure it all fits together with past tokens.

Here's an interesting tidbit, wizards has released some info and apparently saving throws are out. In 4th ed, you get saving throw AC. So you have a reflex AC instead of a reflex save. When someone attacks your reflex (aka, dragons breath), it rolls against your reflex ac.

Found a good summary page of quotes from the designers

But there are still 3 categories of "saves", so tokens working with that should work just fine. It's still d20 too. I made a post a while back with a lot of the known changes, none that I could see that would affect current tokens.

Although henwy, if we completely threw out the old tokens that would solve the power creep problem wouldn't it? ;-)
I've said this before and I've yet to have anyone comment on it but I think it's in TD's best interest to decrease the power of character classes in general and hopefully cause a greater reliance on tokens.

Henwy, I have really got to disagree with you on this one. The game at it's base has to be playable by the casual gamer.

There are clearly two basic groups to content with. The majority play it and think about it once a year, may have some tokens, or might not. There's also a very vocal small minorty outfitted with all reds, partly purples, or all purples, who significantly support TD with their token purchases. And, then there's the group in between. Why not make the game cater to each of these two dominant groups.

I would like to propose something. Let's make the "normal" set of character cards for the majority of players who can not rely on their tokens. Make the "normal" game doable with nothing but a single bag of random tokens per player. This was the way the game was originally conceived and, I am convinced, a significant part of why it has become "the" event of GenCon.

Then, let's look at the most tricked out purple power builds of each character class. Assuming these tricked out builds, make a second set of character cards, with a big red "hardcore" accross then. Make the stats and such for these cards such that with them fully tricked out, they are the same as the "normal" set. So, for example, if we assume the fighter without anything in normal could get his hands on a greatsword and half plate mail, and on hardcore +1 plate and +2 greatsword, then we equalize things:
Let's say the new fighter base is str 14, dex 12 make the hardcore base str 10, dex 8. And, of course, make the monsters and traps harder.
But then why would any of the UR-carrying parties ever do hardcore? Might as well sell your tokens and play on 'normal' mode.
People have been clamoring for a really challenging hardcore for a while. This would be a way to do it. But, maybe it is a bad idea.

If this is a bad idea, I would suggest, at least, that hardcore be playtested (even on conventional table top, as it might be too hard to do for JeffCon) with every one assumed to be fully tricked out with purples.

Exactly. No one want to play crippled characters, they want to kill tougher monsters and take their stuff.

So basically we have 12 pages of people voicing their opinions, and neither side is going to budge. No one is right, no one is wrong. Jeff has the final say in the matter. It also seems the character cards are going to be changed anyways and I think Jeff has plenty of material for consideration from this thread.

Let's let this die for a while and bicker again when the new characters come out. Sounds good?
