TOPIC: PSA from the coaches

PSA from the coaches 6 years 6 months ago #1

PSA from the coaches(i had enough agree with me)
if you have not coached or are a current coach please don't voice a concern of how XYZ will give us problems. there are enough of us active on here to point it out.

I feel people are using that as a cop out tool to disagree with something because they don't like it and have no other reason why

It's not just coaches. Sometimes people attempt to speak on behalf of the DMs or Jeff as well.

But I agree, it's a little cheeky when people use someone else as an excuse for their own opinions.

As an AC, I feel like I interact with coaches and the CCs enough that I can speak on their behalf to some extent, although I usually let them express their own opinions, which they do much better than I could. I certainly feel like I have the right to speak on the behalf of DMs.

Since not everyone is a coach (yet) and may not fully comprehend the crap coaches have to deal with what coaches go through, may I suggest the following:
If you have a genuine concern for the well-being of coaches and feel a proposal may unduly burden them, phrase your concern in the form of a question. So Instead of, "Thing X will suck for coaches!" try something like, "Coaches, I'm worried thing X will suck for you because Y. How do you feel about it?"
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections in this thread .

I'll repeat what I said in the Coaches secret club room (we have cookies) section.

While proliferation of set bonuses is something to be cognizant of, it's not a reason to oppose all new set bonuses.

Some of them don't have much of a lifespan anyway. When was the last time you saw someone use the Mountain Dwarf set?

Just don't give us 5 new sets in a year.

If you are really concerned for our mental health well being, use one of the accepted character generators and encourage everyone to do the same.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

Of course you do, for all the reasons you state. I would never imply otherwise.

My comment was about random players who have no first-hand knowledge about what volunteers go through. ACs don't belong in that bucket. Sorry that I didn't make that clear.

I've been some combination of DM/coach for eight or nine conventions, but I know we get new vols every year. That makes me totally unqualified to speak for anyone but myself. There are probably a lot of things I think are easy that many other DMs would say are definitely not, just because of experience or my twisted way of thinking. ACs are perfectly qualified to speak, especially for new team members, who may be too shy or insecure to speak up on the forums, unlike blabbermouths like me.

The game would be much less fun without volunteers, which is why so many folks want to be nice to us.

I like Druegar's suggestion: if you're not a volunteer, bring up a concern as a question, not a fact. I'll add: If you are, own it. Just say "I'm a coach/DM and I would (or would not) have trouble with X." That's an argument that carries a lot of weight, and only a jerk would ridicule you for acknowledging your limitations as a human being.

Asking if the topic is being discussed in the coaches secret tree fort section would be good as well. If its a significant concern, chances are it is.

it was like I said, There are enough of us who are active that talk..PM or text or whatever, that we actually have a good grasp on what is happeneing
we also have a good idea what new coaches can handle.
We have cheat sheets for them etc.

Well, every year, I end up filling in for a volunteer that needs a natural break or comes back late. It's been too long, though - when I had to run combat I felt as rusty as a rusty nail covered in rust.
