TOPIC: De-Treasure Tokens

De-Treasure Tokens 6 years 11 months ago #1

Now that you're guaranteed 3 treasure tokens, it opens up some design space for tokens that reduce treasure.

I wonder if this might be explored in a future year - there could be tokens like:

Cursed Purse of Preservation : -1 treasure, +1 to AC & Saves

or maybe something more dramatic:

Money Belt of Moderation : +5 STR, +5 DEX, +2 CON, 10 max treasure

Basically I see two big areas: Useful slotless tokens that ding you -1 treasure to equip, or very powerful slotted tokens (would have to compete with BiS) that put hard caps on treasure pulls.

The thought here is that the "cost" of equipping slotted URTE in terms of slots doesn't seem to be a tradeoff that people find difficult to make.

Maybe if instead treasure was a "resource" that people could expend to improve their characters this would actually happen.

You are forgetting that these would completely disrupt side events like True Grind, True Horde, True Arena, PvP events, etc.

That's pretty easy - Such events can just maintain a ban list of tokens. For example, I think we already agree that Artifacts and Cogwind Gears would have to be banned in any PvP format.

Yeah but you're a lost cause

But honestly - is that true in all cases? Would you equip a token saying:

+1 treasure, you may not take standard or free actions, you have a max HP of 1

?

Would you not equip a token saying:

-1 treasure, +5 to hit, AC, saves, and all damage

?

1 treasure for max HP of 1..yes I would. Then i die..leave dungeon and get all my treasure (i wouldnt use it all the time, but there are times I would..like signed up for nightmare and they decide to go normal)

This would be an interesting idea.

A token which: If you survive the adventure, instead of getting a Survivor pin you get 1 extra treasure coin instead.

Would be interesting to see how many people would choose the Survivor pin over 1 treasure coin....

The obvious use would be for your second run through.
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

You could buy pins one year with treasure chips as I remember. Not sure how that worked out. I think only a couple of my group got pins.
You either discover a star or you don't. You arrogant punk.

Chad, I'd be willing to fill every slot with a +1 Treasure Coin token, and enter the Dungeon bare-handed. ;)

Everyone in my group, except perhaps me, would take the Survivor Pin over a Treasure Coin.
