TOPIC: Rope, Spyglass, Tools, etc... useful?

Rope, Spyglass, Tools, etc... useful? 7 years 6 days ago #1

So I'm doing a purge of old tokens and I was curious... are tokens like bedrolls, grappling hooks, rope, etc. actually useful or are they more for flavor/trade? Has anyone used these in runs?

Thanks!

Yes that have been usable in the past on some runs. However they have never been needed in my experience. I used to keep a little book of them just in case, but I lost it a couple years ago and have never gotten around to replacing it.

I definitely recall a puzzle room where we had a 10 foot pole and told the DM we were probing floor tiles with the pole.

But in ~10 years of TD I think that's the only instance where it has both occurred to me to use gear and it has been useful.

In True Grind the experience is much more role play oriented, if you can think of a use for them and explain it to the DM, they'll make an on the spot ruling.

Last year we bribed a monster to fight for us with some crystal skulls in our party.

There was the year with the chasm that seperated half the part and you could send letters back and forth. You could fashion something out of the gear (or find it hidden in the room) as I recall.

The year with the key under the dome forcefield, we showed the DM our rope and twine tokens, and he pulled out a rope and some twine from behind his curtain.

That's the most memorable one for me.

So it sounds like it's worth carrying around maybe a sheet of common items if you can spare it.

I think my big challenge this year is carrying around all that "might" come up in a useful way.

Between scrolls, potions and random gear, I've never been great at making it all readily accessible and I know every second counts in some rooms. But that's another problem entirely!

Thanks all for the feedback!

Universal solvent came in handy at GHC last year when dealing with the mimic if you didn't know what damage to do to it to make it release the party member.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

Oh right, that mirror has come in handy more than once.

I am assuming the DM was Raven?

I always carry a set, and always ask when I can think of a way to use them. Frequently told no as it would break the puzzle or there was no plan for that item to interact with the room, but what kind of adventurers would we be if we stopped carrying gear!

We all carry most of the standard gear. I believe in it being part of the game, and hope hat they are useful sometimes. Coming up with non-standard schemes is fun too.
