A ring of protection and a ring of protection are identical...the magic of the stronger one over-rides the lessor...so unless the hand that the +2 ring is on is torn off...the +1 is latent.

I see the logic that stacking is the simple solution with fewest rules in play - but again I would point out...that taking "same name" stacking out of the game is not difficult, and in fact it promotes more creative tokens that can stack and (again I beat my horse) wouldn't it be COOL if someday some items are created that do not count towards a SLOT count...ooooo the possibilities!

Hey guys, just thought I'd chime in as well. As both a long timer traditional D&D (read: 1st ed.) gamer and DM, as well as a fan of D&D based computer games I would have to say it is somewhat common acceptance that items of identical nature do not stack. Instead as Gary pointed out, the more powerful would simply take precedent. That's how we've played it for many-o-year.

However, as a check, I also loaded up my Neverwinter Nights cpu game (NWN uses a 3rd ed ruleset). I tried to stack two similar rings (Ring of Prot +2 and a Ring of Prot +3) and received the following error message: "You have multiple items equipped or spell effects active that give a deflect AC bonus and the effects will not stack."

My two cents as a tabletop DM and TD DM -- Do not stack identical type of items. If one is more powerful its bonus takes precedent.

I define identical in the same sense Gary noted - a ring of protection vs a ring of protection. The level (+) is irrelevent except when the stronger one is the one you count. One could wear a ring of prot and a amulet of prot as the form is different. I do know some who would argue the form is irrelevent and that you can't wear matching "effects" (as with NWN rules) so one could not wear both a ring of prot and an amulet of prot.

Hmmm... I don't know if it the lack of sleep, or the fact that I have seen too many old Steve Martin SNL reruns lately (or a combination of both) but the first thing that came to mind ;/ when I read this was Arrow thru the Head of Protection +1. Oy.

Henwy: The best I can offer is a purple 400 GP Sapphire, a couple of reds and some cold hard cash. Real "dead presidents". You could ue the money for the upcoming release!!

Thanks,

Larry

Come on Henwy - we are trying a new trade strategy - making people so tired of a string that they trade just to close it off. JK =D

Had some interesting ideas for new tokens...Socks of spider climbing...they stack with any boots worn and grant spider climbing as well as any boot ability.

Bracelet of protection - can be worn under bracers...

Soles of the rogue...can be magically attached to any boots and allows added stealth or extra backstab.

Ring of magic...can be worn with a ring on same hand - doubles that other ring's abilities!!!

See what I mean about "slot free" items...DROOOL!

I will admit I am a little curious where the next segway will take us. Will it be a retread to cross-dressing? Socio-political debates about world affairs? Potayto vs Potahto?

I guess it depends on who's steering the SegWay. Did anyone see any good drivers running the SegWay obstacle course at SoCal?
