TOPIC: So what DOES the Ring of Evasion do?

So what DOES the Ring of Evasion do? 18 years 6 months ago #1

I have saught (seeked?), but have not found, an answer...

I have one of these little purple beauties sitting here in my official rogue's Stack of Neat Stuff, and I have no official word as to what it does. I have a Great Axe +2 (that I cannot use, but looks pretty), and I imagine that it bashes things with a mighty +2-ness, but this ring is a mystery to me.

I have heard several different answers involving fort saves and directed thingymabobbers, and the GM who handed it to me said it allows me to automatically dodge directed trap effects...which would be cool.

So what DOES it do? Or...does the name come from the fact that the people who know are supposed to be Evasive in their answers when asked what it does? ;)

I'd love to hear the Official word on this. Not a "well, I'll have to ask such and such", but a "It does blah blah blah" that I can print out and take with me to TD next year

There was an official ruling in one threador another. It allows a saving throw and if successful no damage at all. If failed, half. Basically it's just like the feat. Don't recall if it only applied to reflex like it should or if it was more general.

According to the DMG 3.5, the ring only applies to Reflex saving throws, and you take full damage if the saving throw fails, no damage if it does not. Thus, the ring is practically useless to a rogue (it does not grant improved evasion if the user has evasion already). This just gives other classes evasion that do not normally have it. I would expect this ring to behave in the same way, seeing as evasion itself is very very nice to have!

I saw semi-official rulings in other treads, but they have all been qualified with "and I will have to ask Jeff" or similar clauses. If there is an official ruling, could you drop a link to it?

As for being useless to rogues, I have always played the rogue, and 'Evasion' as an ability or feat was never part of how the GMs handled me. I took damage just like anyone else. In other words, I never seemed to have that ablity Henwy mentioned above, or any similar ability, just because I was the rogue.

Tom,
There will be an update to the Token guide coming out soon, I need to focus on a few external duties (Cub Scouts) for a few days then I will get to work on the update which will contain an official ruling (blessed by Jeff) on all the new tokens.

One comment I might make on some of the skills and whether they transfer from D&D to TD.

Remember, in most cases the abilities are your own. So don't expect the DM to tell you where a trap is if you declare in "table top" fashion "I'm searching for traps," the most likely response will be "OK, do you find any?" We have made it pretty easy to find most traps in the dungeon so far, but do not expect it to stay that way. You will have to use your own powers of observation and your own abilities, not skill modifiers or points added to a skill category.

Evade and other abilities like spot, listen, track, etc. are the same way. Unless there is a specific modifier on the character sheet or a token that gives a bonus, it is up to you, not the character. I guess what I am trying to say is, don’t assume that the rogue (or any character) has any special bonuses unless they are listed on the character sheet or granted through a token.

And you still got those kind of answers anyways. ;)

When I emailed Lee, he wrote back and said "The ring of evasion works when you are faced with a situation that requires a reflex save. If you make your reflex save roll you take no damage. Hope that helps."
